Went To A PowWow!!

On Sunday, DH and I took the kiddies to a Native American PowWow. It was our first time to ever have the pleasure of seeing one. It was absolutely amazing! The music, dancing and all the bright beautiful costumes left us awe stricken!! What an amazing culture! Our two boys (11 & 16) were not crazy about going and gave me the usual hard time about it..."Aww, c'mon Mom, I wanna go out with my friends!", but I would not hear of it! They were coming....and they enjoyed it! Our daughter (almost 3) was in her glory, dancing and meeting people. Some of the costumes scared her (painted faces and masks), but the people were so good at making her feel comfortable. One man had his face painted black and white and she was soooo scared of him, but he started to play peek-a-boo with her and had her in stitches from laughing so hard. She shook his hand and danced with him!
I have always had a huge interest in Native American culture and the PowWow left me feeling overwhelmed with admiration. The dancers were from ages 2 to 70!! And every single one of them was pure talent! It began with a friendship dance were dancers showed support for all nations and cultures, all vets who have fought in past wars and those who are soldiers in wars today. They danced for all the victims of the WTC, and they danced for peace. All guests who wanted to show support were asked to join in the circle and dance! Beautiful!
We left there feeling so happy that we had the opportunity to witness the event! Our 2 boys have a new respect for a culture they were not familiar with. They thought the dancing (mens dancing) was "tres kewl" as it is a talent that requires tremendous leg muscle and timing! I thought the mens dancing was was "tres kewl" myself, and am thinking of buying DH a costume!
Anyway, if you have never been to one, I highly recommend you go. I will be making this a regular event to see every September!:cool: :D

Sharon so happy you enjoyed this so much. The Indian culture is so amazing. I spent most of my teen years with my best friend on an Indian Reservation and found these people so interesting. They are a wonderful people.

Hubby and I and also my Dad, his wife and my sister go to one every year here. It is always in August so we make sure we take off of work that weekend. I just loooove the smell of the sage burning and the sound of the chanting and the drums. There is just such a powerful magical feeling about the whole thing. I always buy some sage and at least something else when I'm there. My favorite is when they do the hunting dance. The one person has a huge deer head and skin on and assumes the role of the deer and the other the hunter. It is just amazing to watch. I still have yet to get there for the fire dance at night. Maybe next year!

I've gone to a couple and stayed all day enjoying the whole experience. (And eyeballing all the good looking men ). The dancing is fun to watch as well as interesting. Not to mention the wonderful food and crafts. I have been fascinated with the Native American culture since I was a child. PowWow's are a good way to learn about it and have a great time doing it

My son's father is native american and I have so much video footage of my son dancing with ankle bells and eagle feathers when he was younger at pow wows. He gets embarrased now when I bring it up but I'm glad he had the experience.

We have one or two a year in Waynesville Ohio and my wife's family always go. Her Great grandmother was a Souix and they take great pride in their heritage. My children love going out in the circle and dancing with all the people dressed up in native clothing. I think it's cool too and I like the different things they make , but I get kind of bored after a while. I hope my children are learning to appreciate their heritage.
