My poor baby had surgery yesterday to remove his undescended testicle (his other was removed also). He went in at 8:00 and i was allowed to pick him up at 5:00. We were not allowed to give him any food or water until this morning. He is soooooooo sad. He is 6 1/2 months old. We kept everything quiet for him last night and he slept. This morning, he wouldn't get up. I put his food out and he didn't move. I ended up hand feeding him, and he ate everything. He has not drank anything yet though. I did give him some crushed ice and he ate probably 1 crushed cube than didn't want anymore. He did go out and pee, but than came in and stood behind the dining room table with his head hung low. he wouldn't move. i tried to coax him back to his blanket but no luck. Than I waited real quiet to see if he would lay down, but no. He loves to sleep on the couch, so I ended up picking him up and putting him on the couch. He just looks so sad and unhappy. Should the vet have given him some pain medication? Since this was not a simple neutering, should I call the vet and ask for something? He must be in pain? I mean it was abdominal surgery. My heart is breaking for him, but I don't know what to do. I know he needs rest, but he just looks so miserable. how long will he be like this?
Any advise would be helpful.
Thanks

It wouldn't hurt to get him some pain meds since they did have to open teh abdominal cavity to remove the other testicle--so basically your boy had a spay! I hope he feels better soon. It isn't too uncommon for them to not eat well after surgery, sometimes the residual affects of the anesthesia bothers their tummy! I would try offering some chicken/rice perhaps, it is bland and easy on the system and yummy smelling. It should help perk him up as well! Healing hugs for your boy! :)

Yes, definitely ask your vet for pain meds. Some vets say that the pain is good because it forces the animal to keep still and not stress their incision but that is quite old fashioned thinking. There is no benefit to an animal being uncomfortable and abdominal surgery does result in discomfort.

My Eli had the exact same surgery in Feb 2006. My vet kept him overnight, and I picked him up at noon the next day. The vet assistant warned me that Eli would sleep a lot, but didn't give him any pain medication. The problem I encountered was that Eli began to lick his stitches when I wasn't looking. That caused a huge problem. I ended up having to put a lampshade on his head, which he hated and so did I. I should have watched him better because his licking the incision made it take longer to heal, I think (I could be wrong). Anyway, today Eli is fine and active, and you'd never know he went through the surgery. Just don't let your boy lick the stitches. Good luck, I'm sure he'll be fine in no time.

For sure check on the pain med. The surgery is just like a spay, very invasive so the pain meds would help to take the edge off for him. When my girl had her spay she was eating that night and rolling around on the carpet chewing a bone. I had 4 syringes for her and popped them in her mouth morning and evening for the first 2 days. I'm hoping when Torin goes he recovers like her - he too will have the major surgery as neither one of his testicles dropped. I'm def going to go with the pain med and the IV therapy - helps them recover extremely fast. Give your baby a hug and I'm sure within a day or too he will be moving around more. The first night /day is ALWAYS THE worst for them. If he didn't have the IV therapy it will take a little longer for all the meds to come out and for him to start feeling more dog like.

Poor Guy, Elvis too had this opp last year, (there is a pic in my gallery of him looking sad after it) I was given pain relief for him, so if I were you I would call the vet.

Unforutnatly Elvis would not stay still for long and split the stiches the day after and had to go back under to be re-stitched! The vet then gave me some calming tablets which I would not recomend, as he was well spaced out fell of the bed and made him worse as he would walk then suddenly fall over!

Hope he feels better soon

Sugery costs

My toby's testicles havent decended yet either and I know that he's going to need surgery. I wanted to ask about how much this surgery costs. If you dont want to tell me that fine but I just wanted an idea what to expect. Anyway, please let me know either way. Thank you -- JJMezzapesa

Cost will vary from place to place. Here in Sask, Canada - I'm looking at about $400 - this includes the IV Therapy, pain meds, wellness panel and actual surgery. If I skip the panel (pre-op blood work), it will be about $300. My girls spay was about $300 as well.
