Our 1 1/2 yr old white male boxer named Dexter has recently been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. Quite possibly Histiocytic colitis. He just started baytril 138 mg once a day and metronidazole 750 mg per day. Any one here have any experience with this disease and the treatment for it? What was the outcome? He is the sweetest dog and we are so worried. Any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks, kim...

I don’t have personal experience with colitis but many boxers that come into our rescue have this condition. It’s fairly common within this breed. And sadly many people give up their boxers that have this condition (some people refuse to put up with diarrhea).

I have heard of the treatment that you vet has suggested. Also do your research on diets. Many dogs with colitis need to be on a home cooked diet. Also some dogs do well with diets like the dick van pattens / natural balance duck & potato formula.

Google “boxer colitis” and you’ll get some good info. Also search this form & you'll find others who have dealt with it.

Sherlock has boxer colitis

Interestingly enough, I just got home from the vet and found out my boxer puppy of 10 months has boxer colitits; basically the same thing I believe. Here is a link to a really good and informative website my vet recommended I read before going today.

I am going to first try adding bran to Sherlocks diet, if that doesn't work, then I am going to have to use an antibiotic treatment as needed forever:(
Good luck.

We dealt with colitis, although she hasn't been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis.
I started homecooking for her and her diahrrhea has almost completely disappeared. It will flare up sometimes if she gets into something, but for the most part we have it under control. Diet definitely plays a huge role. Also, try three smaller meals a day instead of two larger ones.

We had constant colitis for the first 6 months we had Hurricane, and fairly often (two weeks out of every month or so) after that. We had him on meds to help off and on, but we finally determined that it was indeed his food. When he got super stressed about anything, it went from normal diarreah to bloody. We went through several of the grain free options before we found one that did the trick. I am happy to say that we have been diarreah free for about 3 months now! :) I know as it has been mentioned that some colitis sufferers never do well on kibble and do need homecooked or raw diets. We got lucky in that we found a kibble that Hurricane could tolerate. Best of luck to you and your baby!

Hi,

Bailey is 4 years old now, and his colitus hasn't flared up for a long time thanks to his diet. He can either have a home cooked diet - or does well on James Wellbeloved.

When we first found out he had colitus (at the age of about 1) it was very scary to know what to do and whether we could cope, but thankfully a change in diet was successful and I urge you to do the same.

Fingers crossed!!
