The Big Drip

Gabe is just about 1 year old. He has not done a number 2 in the house for at least 5 months. His peeing on the other hand is a different story. It's gone around my household as an arguement on many levels. I figure i would ask everyone here.

I take Gabe out like once every two hours or so because he has a problem with peeing. He will be just hanging out and walking around or playing with me. And out of nowhere, he will drip a strip of pee while he is walking or just do it very fast.

I have already taken him to the vet for a UTI check and he was clear. He is also not neutered. i heard that neutering can help with the "pee instinct". He has been better but i feel like when he just walking around normal, if i dont take him out, he will just pee. I have thick dark red carpets and when he pees, if i am not watching him, i find out by stepping in it. It's very frustrating.

I can take him out at ANY time and he will pee. My mother takes care of him while i am at work and during that time he spends some time in the crate. So while i'm not home, she babys him. i feel like maybe she may be giving him to much water. She is a "psycho" when it comes to dogs. Always making sure the collar isn't too tight, when it never changes and always putting a bowl of water down. At this point, i am confused about how much water Gabe should have on a daily basis. But when he goes for the water bowl, he attacks it as if he were stuck in the desert. i believe this behavior is why my mother thinks he is dying of dehydration. But the truth is, he will drink as much water as you put in front of him. the wierd thing is, during the night, he holds his pee until the morning every time. occassionaly he'll wake me up early if it's an emergency.

i just need to know if anyone else has had these types of issues. can a dog really drink too much water? can a dog learn to not take a dump in the house, but think it's ok to pee in the house? thanks for any input. and i have read some other posts, but the ones i read seem a little different. i am looking for someone who has seen this exact behavior.

I don't have any advice about the peeing issue since I haven't experienced that. But, as far as gulping the water down. If he doesn't have a water bowl down all the time so that he can go drink when he is thirsty, that might be why he is gulping down all the water he can get when a water bowl is finally put down. He may be wanting to get as much water as he can as he knows he won't be able to have any more until it is put down the next time. I started taking my pups water bowl up because he would drink a lot and then puke (which he still does sometimes if he drinks a bunch of water and then goes back to playing hard), but I noticed that he didn't gulp water down as much when he knew the water was there all the time. And, I'll also watch him when he drinks and tell him to slow down or stop and take a break if he's gulping down too much water. I'll also put a bunch of ice cubes in his bowl, which keeps him from being able to gulp it down. Or, I'll only put a small amount of water in the bowl, so he kinda has to lick it up and can't just gulp it down.

Maybe yours is just drinking so much water during the day that its hard for him to hold it and he just goes whenever. If he isn't gulping down water at night, that might be why he lasts through the night. I'm not sure.

I hope you get the help you need.

Funny you should post about this problem because I just posted about the same thing a few weeks ago. Joe is 14 months old and neutered. He has done the walking and peeing thing about 5-6 times. He also was brought to the vet and checked out okay. I tend to think that sometimes he is having too much fun to go outside and pee. I also think that maybe he waits too long to let us know and then it's too late. I also think that maybe I miss his plee to go outside. This has only started this summer with Joey too. Sorry I don't have a specific answer for you, but these are my thoughts on the topic...maybe they make sense to you too!

very interesting. yeah i dont usually keep a water bowl for him all day long. only certain times, so it is very possible he is just trying to get his fill. i have tried to leave water bowls down for him in the past and he just makes a big mess of it. and it makes me feel a little better that someone else's boxer does the pee-walk. i guess ill keep my eyes open for more clues. thank you both for the posts!
