Taloxi battles the bees (and lost)...

The nest still hasn't been found, but after returning home from a dentist appointment on Monday I discovered a very different-looking Taloxi. She looked as though she had a softball in her right cheek and her face was puffy. Upon closer examination, I saw several whelps all over her body. What to do... what to do... Panic! My first thought was s snake bite, but the whelps didn't make sense for that. Bees? Yellow jackets? I called the vet and he was in surgery. I told the girls I was on the way b/c it looked really bad. Sure enough, once I got there he pops his head out long enough to say she appeared to have been stung and was having a reaction to it. (Ya think?)

I left her there for treatment (benadryl injections) and went home to find the culprits. After walking every inch of my 2 acre back yard with Trallis (who didn't have a single sting), I found nothing. Some holes in the ground, which made me suspect yellow jackets, but not one single flying enemy. I picked Taloxi up that evening and walked the yard with her, as well. I hoped to see a moments hesitation in a particular area considering her ordeal, but no... not one single sign. She and Trallis pounced around as usual and I haven't seen a thing.

I'm giving Taloxi 2 Benadryl/day for her battle scars and itching. All of her swelling is gone and she's her happy-go-lucky self again. Maybe next time she'll run instead of sticking around to fight, but somehow I doubt it. Of course, I hope there won't be a "next time".

I hope there wont be a next time either for your dog, but Rocky did have 2 occurances with bees within a few weeks of each other... poor fella just look so miserable... 1st one was on the front part of his jowl and made his whole muzzle swell... the 2nd time was his bottom lip and he looked like Bubba from Forest Gump... too funny... he would just sit there and look silly... anyways, save yourself the money and get some benadryl for your cabinet just in case there is a next time... just regular old benadryl no nitetime 'dm' formula...

take care, hope your baby has learned the lesson of playing with bees... it's been a few months now, I hope Rocky has... ;)

We have 3 yellow jacket nests in our yard that we have tried to get rid of with no luck and of course the girls have gotten stung :-( They didn't seem to bother Holly when she got it, she just looked at where it got her like "what was that?" But poor "little"(haha) Shelby has gotten stung twice, the first time it looked like a small ball on her leg and then yesterday she had one get stuck in her butt!! She was running up the yard and suddenly started running in circles and wouldn't stop,I finally got her to come a little way to me and I could see it and had to knock it off with my shoe. She didn't swell from it at least but I think her back leg was a little stiff last night from it.

Ooooh! sounds like a bad spat! You must've been a wreck! And poor Taloxi was probably scared to death! :( Glad she's got Benedryl now! Hope she's on the mend soon!

Do you have bushes near your house???? Sam was attacked by a batch of ground bees once that came flying out of the bushes! There nasty! And not as easy to spot unless you're searching in bushes!

Yikes, I just found two small yellow jacket hives! I guess I'll spray them unless anyone can tell me a better way of getting rid of them.

Taloxi vs. Bees Update

Taloxi is doing great! Thanks! She has healed quickly and I believe is relieved to know "Mom" has Benadryl on-hand for just such an emergency. Still no sign of the flying culprits. No idea where they are or where they came from. At least she's not afraid of bees. I caught her and Trallis hopping around the backyard after a big bumble bee yesterday. I fussed at them both, but the bee quickly eluded them both. Thanks again for the get-well wishes.
