My little girl is at the vet's office right now being monitored for a rock that is in her intestine. I am just sick about it, and I am waiting anxiously for an update on her progress. Hindsight is trully 20/20 because I now realize that she has probably been doing this for a while, but this is the first one she hasn't thrown up or passed on her own. We have a covered dog run that we put the dogs in when we have to leave the house. Otherwise they are inside with us, except to potty. On a few occassions, she has not wanted to eat her food and has paced around the house. In these cases she has wanted to go outside, where she has eaten grass and threw up. I just chalked this up to her having an upset belly, and not thought much of it. Well this is the same behavior she was exhibiting last night, and when it continued on for a few hours, I became really concerned and took her to the vet. They did an X-ray, and she has a rock in her intestine. They are going to monitor her, and they have her on an IV in hopes that they can "slick" up her intestine and she will pass it on her own. However if it becomes obstructed it is time for surgery. I am just so scared. One on hand, I am afraid for how painful it will be for her to pass it, but I am even more concerned about surgery.

So my question, after my long drawn out post.. Has anyone had experience with this type of surgery? What are the long term issues associated with it? Is she going to have a potential for intestinal issues? The rocks are being taken out of the yard today, and we are researching a suitable replacement. I am just concerned about how this will effect her long term.

Thanks for bearing with my long post, and for any input/advice you may have.

I'm sorry that has happened to Sunday. I'm also sorry that I cannot offer any advice. But, I would like to say, I hope that everything works out with Sunday. Let us know what happens.

Lots of hopeful and healing thoughts going out for Sunday. You must be frantic with worry. I hope the rock moves through OK, and that she will be feeling much better very soon. Grunt used to love rocks when he was a little puppy, too - he never ate any, but it was always a concern. Please keep us posted on how Sunday is doing.

So sorry to hear about Sunday, my Lisa has an awful habit of swollowing stones but she has always (fingers crossed) brought them back up.
May be the vets can blast it with ultrasound (I think that´s what its called) and the rock can be passed more easily. I don´t know if vets do this or is it only on humans when they have kidney stones???? It may be worth looking in to.

I hope that everything works out okay.
Lets us know how she doing.

I am sorry to hear about Sunday. I haven't had any first hand experience with my boxer eating rocks, but I have heard of other boxers doing it. Most boxers seem to survive the surgery just fine. Hopefully the surgery won't be necessary and she will pass the rock just fine.

I am sending positive healing vibes to Sunday!

Thanks for all of the kind thoughts! I am glad to say Sunday is home and acting like her normal self. After 2 days in the hospital on an IV and a slow introduction of food, she was able to come home last night. They were watching for signs of stomach/intestinal distress, and since she didn't show any, they felt safe about letting her pass it at home. As soon as we got home, we let the dogs out to potty and she passed it right away. She only seemed to strain a little, so I am hoping it didn't really hurt her. We are getting synthetic grass installed in their covered run area, so we won't have anymore issues with rocks. The hardest part now is keeping her from wrestling with Gibson for a day or so. He seems to know something is wrong with her, he keeps licking her and usually it's the other way around. He also seems to be acting a little cautious around her, usually he is really rough when he plays with her. It's really sweet.

Thanks again for all of the positive thoughts and well wishes!

Yaayyyy!!!! So glad to hear that Sunday passed the rock - it must be SUCH a relief to you. Hope she is feeling better soon and back to wrestling with Gibson (who is such a sweetie for being so gentle with his sister!). :)
