no new news, but lots of new information!

Okay, so we're back from the vet (FiNALLY)!

We didn't really get any new news, but we did get a lot more information (does that make sense?)!

Dr. Zoltner (in Denton) just told us what he thought was wrong with Asia and referred us to the place we've been having problems with. The Dr. in Frisco (still couldn't tell you her name) made us feel more at ease with the whole situation, as well as explaining and comparing her EKG results with a normal heart rate, and showing us how they calculate if her heart is enlarged or not. She took us into the back and showed us all the technical stuff, and it made me feel a lot safer.

I thought about switching clinics from the Banfield in Frisco to the one in Denton, but we decided against it because today we were reminded how much more comfortable and caring the people over in Frisco are.

So, the results of her EKG ARE abnormal, but of course that doesn't automatically diagnose her with anything. It showed arrythmias when she was at rest - there would be a normal line, then there would be a gap, a couple of normal lines, a couple of gaps. I don't know, I really couldn't read it all that well, but comparing it to a 'normal' heart rate, it was surely different.

We were told that her heart looked enlarged, BUT (but's are good right now;)) there wasn't one side that looked bigger than the other. Both sides were porportionate with one another, they were just big. Weird ...

So, we are still told that we need to find someplace with a colored doppler ECG (I think it's a colored ECG, colored something, anyway) so that we can tell how her blood is flowing through her heart.

My Mom just reminded me of how many people I know in the Animal Vet practice field - my cousin, Denise, graduated from Texas A&M with a 4.0 and is a certified Vet, as well as our old vet in my hometown (who is very familiar with Texas A&M people), as well as Dr. Hoegemeyer (the 'ex' family guy)! Sooo, I'm thinking I need to be using my connections at this time if needed! ;)

The nurse, Diedre (love her!), is looking up numbers, prices and calling Doctors from up here and down at Texas A&M. The Doctor is studying her EKG results and measured her heart from the XRays and will call me between now and Tuesday with all the information they have gathered together.

Sorry this is so long! I am so full of information of new stuff right now!

Holden's Mom, I remember earlier you mentioned the Holter Moniter that was used to determine whether or not Holden had BCM. I have looked at so much information regarding cardiomyopathy that I have seen the Holter Moniter come up every single time. I mentioned it to our vet and she said that after we look at the colored doppler, and we still need, or just want, more proof, we should request the Holter Moniter, because it is such a positive device when it comes to detecting Cardiomyopathy.

I'm probably going to do this everyday because I am so greatful, but I want to thank everybody for your replies. I have found each and every one of them to be helpful, and I think with everyday coming here, Mark and I get a little stronger in dealing with this. My Mom always hears me talk about Boxerworld (I'm ALWAYS referring to it whether or not it is a bit of information, or a funny story I've heard) but she never really knew how great of a 'community' it was until I told her to get on here and see how many people care about her lil' granddawgger (that's what Asia is to her, ya know ;)) - she was surely impressed! You guys have been touching a lot of hearts lately, not just mine, so I thank you all ... ;)

*BiG HuG and lots of kisses from Asia* lovicon

My 15 year old son goes to the Cardiologist every other year now. He has a bicuspid aortic valve. They do the doppler on him. It is really cool. You can really see the blood flow. It is just like the doppler radar that they show on TV for weather. So glad you got some news. Sometimes being afraid of the unknown or the anticipatory anxiety is the worst. You keep hanging in there.

Sounds like Asia has what my Rob has! When he was in ICU every 14th heart beat was off ( I counted..i kept track of everything abnormal..and anything abnormal scared the daylights out of me) One if his heart valves doesnt open when it should, his ekgs show an arrythmia too.

Im glad you havent gotten any bad news...but it would still be nice to know what exactly is going on. Keeping fingers and paws crossed.

Shanz - Oh my! Is Rob your boyfriend? I'm so sorry that he's got that problem! It does sound kinda like Asia, huh? Tell him he's not alone - hehe! ;) How is he now??

Abnormal things scare me as well so I know what you mean - I would especially freak if Mark was in ICU (SCARY PLACE)!

Hope all is well with Rob now! ;)

I know you still have a long road ahead to find out what exactly is wrong and what you can do about it, but it sounds like you will be getting the info you need soon. I have gone through some scary heart stuff with myself this year and was freaking out until I at least knew what was going on. Now I feel better knowing what type of arrythmia I have and that it is manageable. (After two EKG's, ultrasounds, holter monitor for 24 hours, etc...) I know it is scary to not know, but hang in there. I am praying for your pup and for you to have the strength to deal with whatever may happen. Sending a hug from Killian! :)

We've been waiting with crossed fingers and paws for your update today. I'm glad to hear you were able to get more information today. Maybe not all the answers, but information is good. There were numerous times during Belle's illness when I would consult with the cardiologist and my brain would sort of shut down and I couldn't absorb any more information. I would usually have to talk to my regular vet again, and she would explain things once more, and I could then take it in and process the situation. No one side of her heart being larger than the other could mean she does not have "dilated" cardiomyopathy. That would be good, well not good, but you know what I mean. I know when we looked at Belle's X-rays and the cardiology reports, one side (I think the left) was definitely larger than the other side of her heart. Remember many pages ago I mentioned when our regular vet looked at Lacy's chest films he was concerned with the size of Lacy's heart. It turned out that is just the way her heart is, and it was nothing to worry about. Belle had the doppler color flow echocardiogram. They used this to measure the thickness of the heart walls, blood flow and other things. Belle also wore a holter monitor because they wanted to get as much information as they could about the type of arrhythmia she was having and to determine the best medication to put her on.

I hope by this time next week your questions are answered and you know what is going on. I totally feel for what you and Mark are going through right now. Stay strong and give Asia some extra hugs and kisses from me and my boxer babies in Virginia (plus my one special boxer angel who is looking down on us from Rainbow Bridge).

yup, Rob is my bf hes actually doing a lot better now, its been about a yr and a half now since it happened. because the one vavle doesnt do its job the others go faster to compensate and result in an abnormal heartbeat. He has an ICD (implantable cardio defibrillator) so if his heart does stop again, or it beats too fast or too slow, itll shock him...and the doctor says thatll feel like being kicked in the chest by a horse. About every month he goes into get his ICD read, they attack suction cups to the bottom of his feet and to his hands, then put a mouse over his ICD (its in his chest) and it reads all the activity his heart has had. When he first got it put in, theyd read it and find that numrous times since the last reading, his heart rate almost hit the mark for too fast and it almost shocked him. Yesterday he had it read and everything was fine.

Unfortunately they dont have ICD's for dogs though.. i should invent one.

I am so glad you got some much needed information at the vet's office today. At least now you understand things a little better. Hopefully you can get in soon to get the color thinga magigy. (I'm not too good with those technical terms) We hope to hear more good news in the future and remember that all of your BW pals are here for you and rooting for you the whole way. Give Asia lots of loving from me and Bella. I also send hugs to you and Mark. I know you both need comforting right now. Thankfully, you both have each other during this hard time. Keep us posted and we are sending even more ((positive vibes)) Asia's way!!

Oh I've been waiting all day for your post. I am really hoping all of this is just a mistake and Asia is a normal, healthy, goofy boxer puppy. It sounds like you got some answers and more will be coming soon. That must be such a relief for you both. I know the next few days while waiting will seem like forever but stay positive and just give that sweet mushy face lots of kisses. Oh and make sure a couple of them are from Bugzy and I. Take care! Heather
