Asia's fainting

Dear Haley and Mark,

I hope Asia is feeling better! I have had 3 boxers, and two of them have had a condition they say is inherited called cardiomyopaythy. You may also see it as "Boxer Cardiomyopathy", different from the cardiomyopathy in dobermans.
It usually does not appear this young, and the extra exertion may have something to do with it. It is a heart condition , that this young, can be managed for a while. Ask your vet to give her an EKG, which could show an arrithymia. If it does, there are meds for her, also some Boxers are put on a monitor for 24 hours to see if they have this problem. The underlying problem appears to be breeding, and they are working hard to solve this issue in the Boxer world. I have Taylor, almost 6 years old, and she first starting having these symptoms in Dec. 2004. I immediately took her to the vet, as I previously had male boxer , Oscar, with similar problems. I am happy to say she is alive and kicking , even though we have had to manage her running and play time with other dogs. That, as you now is hard to do with a Boxer.
She is on sota , an anti-arrythimia drug, and enalapril, a heart drug that increases blood flow to the heart. We are at the point of just being blessed to still have her.
Since Asia is so young, I would suggest having the vet check for an arrythmia through and EKG, otherwise you would never know. In a way it is a blessing she fainted, because now you know there is a problem . Some Boxers go years without ever showing signs , and it has been there all along! Good luck, and my thoughts and prayers are with you , Mark and Asia.

First off, let me start by saying this has been a terribly long past couple of weeks ... between my grandma's death, my friends, Mark, school, and work, I'm about to go out of my mind!

Something is not at all okay with our baby girl Asia. Since this weekend was my grandma's funeral, my entire family was there, and their dogs too. Asia ran around with my Aunt Jane's crazy chocolate lab, Molly, all weekend long. Asia is a big bundle of energy but even Molly wore her out. Needless to say, she has been sleeping since we got home.

This morning, Mark was walking out of the apartment to go to work and Asia's best friend (who she hasn't seen in awhile), Josie, was outside. Asia got up real quick and Josie ran into our apartment and they began playing. Asia was growling a lot and I was thinking maybe she was just tired. So, they went outside and were playing just fine. All of a sudden, Josie swatted Asia (she is a Boxer, too) and Asia fell on her side and didn't get up. ((I was inside, Mark was outside, when all this was happenning but I ran outside as soon as I saw her laying on the ground)). Mark was trying to lift her up and she was just like jelly. Her eyes were open but she looked confused and she wouldn't stand up - like her whole body was numb or something - and she urinated while on her side. We eventuelly got her up and ran inside to check her.

She wobbled inside and instead of drinking water (like normal), she went and layed down on her pillow ... I checked her gums and they were ghost white!

I got her in my car and ran over to our vet's office. They were so nice, they got me in right away. The vet checked her over and said it didn't sound like a seizure. I asked if it could have been from her getting in to anything and he told me No because they wouldn't explain why her gums went white. His prognosis (which isn't based on any facts as of yet) is that it is heart related.

He told me this could be the first of a series of events, or we may never see this happen again. I wondered if it could have just been from exhaustion? Everything I named he told me that couldn't be it because it wouldn't have caused her gums to go white.

So, she is still at the vets. I have nothing to do but sit here and wait. They are going to do two chest films and call me and we'll go from there. I just called them (she hasn't been there but for like 20 minutes) and told them that if they find anything seriously wrong, call me and tell me what they are going to do because I will do ANYTHING to keep her healthy!

Does anyone know what this could have been other than heart problems? Is that what it sounds like? Does anyone else have any other stories that could help me out with what I'm dealing with?

This is so hard - she's only a little over a year and a half old. If something happens to her, Mark and I will be absolutely devastated. I know it sounds crazy but she's like a child to us. Not the kind of child that we buy clothes for (except for cute sweaters during the winter:rolleyes: ), but the type of child that you start to miss when you're gone for a few hours or all day.

Anyway, the vet's office will be calling me at 2 to let me know what the X Rays showed, if anything, then I will be picking her up soon thereafter, hopefully.

Send us some get well wishes and healing vibes because we are in dire need of those right about now! :(

You guys continue to amaze and impress me! Mark was on here last night reading through all of your replies and he was in tears at the amount of compassion you guys have for our little girl!

We are off to the vet now. We have to go to the Banfield here in Denton to get Asia's XRays and other stuff, then off to Frisco. Our normal Dr. Moore isn't in today, so we are going to see a woman Dr. (forgot her name) that we've seen before, and I remember really liking her!

Wish us luck! We'll post more when we get back (probably late because we'll be hitting rush hour traffic on the way home :eek: )..

Forgot to add: Even though we are due for one vaccination, we are not going to do it today. The nurse even said it wouldn't hurt, so we aren't at all worried about that ... Thanks for the pointers involving that!
