This is not really a health question. Any suggestions for eliminating skunk odor from dogs. The other night my little girl was hit right between the eyes in our back yard. She chased the skunk and caught it twice only to be sprayed on her third attempt. She then ran around the yard in circles with her eyes shut and she was foaming at the mouth and snorting very heavily. I grabbed her and began to wash her face and flush her eyes with water from the garden hose. She is okay but her little head still stinks. I tried commercial products from the pet store but because of her eyes and mouth I really can't use the product at its full strength. Help!

When Hannah was skunked she took a shot in the face and chest. Boy did she stink. I contacted a grooming service and they sold me some deodorizing pet shampoo made by NILodor. One bath and she was good to go. Micah was skunked recently and I had some left and used it again, two year old bottle, and it did the trick again. Micah was skunked in the face and I washed his face. He didn't have any problems. The bottle says it is tearless and safe. It doesn't have a web site on the bottle but it does have a phone number. If you are interested PM me and I will give you the info.

The best over the counter stuff is... douche. Yup, vinegar and water based. Buy a bunch. Smile stiffly and tell the cashier it's "for the dog." :)

There's a homemade concoction that works:

1 quart 3% Hydrogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
2 tbsp Dish Detergent. The stuff for washing dishes in the sink, not something for dishwashers.

Mix together, then apply to dog, leaving on for 4-5 minutes and massaging into fur (not too complex with a boxer!)

Note -- this has to be made fresh -- it won't keep (note the foaming action!), so you can't mix it ahead of time.

Phee-Yhewww! Vanilla Extract worked for us.

It has been years since we had this problem and we only had to deal with it once. It was the last day of camping trip, and I got to enjoy the long 5-1/2 hour drive home with a skunky pup sitting in the car with me!

Everyone recommended alternating tomato juice with regular dog shampoo. That did not cut it. Then someone recommended Vanilla Extract. We got a big bottle and washed him up. It did the trick! Mind you, he smelled like cookie dough, but that was a big improvement over the tomato-skunk-dog who had been roaming the house!

The douche idea is hilarious, but probably very effective. Vanilla Extract did the trick for us, and was not expensive (nor embarassing) to purchase in large quanities!

Good luck! Wonder if your girl will just ignore the skunk next time?
