My heart goes out to you at this time. We had a once in a lifetime dog with Rocky. While not as accomplished as Tegan, he was a unique dog who captured the hearts of all who knew him. Our vet, and his groomer said he was a one in a million dog. And indeed, he was.
We never imagined that we could be so lucky again with another dog, even another Boxer. It bothered me to think that it might even be remotely possible, as though thinking such a thing would somehow diminish Rocky's greatness.
But, we were wrong. Indy came at a difficult time, with enormous paw prints to fill. But, fill them he did, and then some. While I wouldn't say he is a better dog, he is Rocky's equal, better in some ways, and not as good in others. He is different.
As magnificent as Tegan was, you had much to do with her achievements, her personality, and her spirit. Every dog has an enormous potential for greatness, but how they develop depends in great measure on us, and our dedication, and devotion to their training and well being.
I think that is one of the things that makes it so difficult to lose them. We invest so much of ourselves in them. The joy is that they repay our efforts and love for them many times over.
It was over a year after we lost Rocky that I was able to think about him without getting emotional. And now, nearly three years later, I still shed tears for him from time to time.
To explain how I feel in the simplest terms, I wouldn't have given up Rocky to get Indy, but now, I wouldn't give up Indy were it somehow possible to have him back.
Hopefully, you too, will share the same experience. I know the void in your home and your heart. I've experienced it. And while neither Tegan nor Rocky could be "replaced", that emptiness and sorrow can be replaced. My heart's desire is for you to heal, and find another Boxer to bring that joy into your home, and more importantly, your heart.
God bless.
Tom
