Tribe23,

I read through your thread about Sophie today and am sorry you had to put her to sleep. I am struggling today with what to do with Riggo. Yesterday he seemed pretty good, ate well and had some energy to play with his ball. This morning he wasn't doing very good and vomitted.

He so far has only been on white cell count increasers and pain medication after the biopsy we had done last Friday.

I got some further clarification from my vet yesterday that he has the less aggressive chronic leukemia and he told me that %75 of dogs with this type of leukemia last about a year on chemo. After reading your post I am struggling with what to do. Start chemo or not.

A few of the posts said that their boxer lasted another 8 months or so and that it was well worth it.

I am absolutely torn on what to do.

To anyone else who has put their pet on chemo I'ld love to hear your thoughts I go back and forth on what to do and can't seem to make up my mind. It seems like my whole world has stopped right now and I can't figure out what to do.

Re: Chemo

Tried to PM you with info regarding the name of another owner and her e-mail address who is subsequently going thorugh the same thing you are, but was unable to. Here is a portion of an update she sent with regards to her dog's chemo:

"Thank you ever so much for remembering my sweet boy... So far, he's doing great!!! Tell me how your new pup is doing!! Do you have pictures?? I'd love to see that face!!

Cole has an appt. tomorrow morning with his oncologist... a check-up and I'm sure another round of chemo. He had his CBC done last week to see if the chemo. is destroying good cells...

Guess what..... his vet called to say his red and white cells were "beautiful"...!! Now, I must say that I'm afraid to get excited, but I know the Oncologist will be ever soooooo delighted.

Cole is happy, even plays once in a while - just a little, but what a great improvement. His vet, who is a great guy, thought Cole wouldn't make it because he wasted away to nothing in a very short period and collapsed, couldn't walk, wouldn't eat... whew.... what an awful time. I don't know what I would have done if I didn't work from a home office and be able to watch his every breath to see if it differed from the previous one. His bed was right at my feet so I could observe him.

Bottom line - is that he is feeling pretty good...eats well has regained his normal body weight, and...I've been able to work him up to walking almost a mile in the morning...slowly...but walking. His back legs and hips are weak so I'm trying to build them up. It's too hot to walk later in the day so I concentrate on the morning coolness for his excercise".

Hope this will give the encouragement you need right now. Check out the URL for the canine cancer support group I posted earlier - I'm sure they can also provide you with a wealth of info and support right now. Good luck - Cathy

Lymphoma

When our Sophie was diagnosed with lymphoma, the vet said it was a very aggressive grade of the disease and even with chemo, 6 months would probably be the high end of what we could expect. That was the main reason we chose not to go with chemo. She lasted about a month on steroid treatment and was happy and healthy up until the final couple of days. Every piece of advice I got was to go with your own heart and what you think is right. In our case, we couldn't see putting her through the chemo for an extra couple of months - for our sake. In your case, chemo could prolong his life for a much longer amount of time and it would be totally worth it. Only you will be able to know what is best.

Research, research, research as much as you possibly can so you can so you can have good conversation with your vet and bring up different possibilities and options. There is a wealth of information on the web about dog health issues and the folks on this board know what they're talking about.

Healing vibes to Riggo. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
Hope and prayer are wonderful, magical things. We wish the best for you.

When we discussed the possibility of chemo for Curly (mast cell tumor) I was told that dogs do not have the same problems with chemo and not feeling well as humans do.
