Hey I saw a beautiful boxer. He or she was playing in the front yard with its owner.
QUESTION! HOW!! My two year old dog is not ever going to be calm enough to stay within our reach.. She would run and run away never to be seen again.

Cayenne has always had a good recall. She likes to know where I am at all times. Of course the yards that she is in is big and we do not have a lot of traffic. I always have a leash with me if she is not in a fenced in environment. Lately however, she has been going through some growing pains and she has begun to chase things. So I still do not believe that I would risk it.

I never trust Brighid to be off lead in an area without a fence. Although I know she loves me and I am the center of her world if she saw a squirrel she would be off like a bullett.

I don't know if Sammi will ever be that trustworthy. He loves other dogs too much. He would take off and I wonder whether or not he would come back. I'm too scared of losing him. I sure wish I could though. To see him running and playing would be great.

A good recall comes from lots of obedience training. We've worked really hard with Lexi on recall and she is our best at it. I'd trust her just about anywhere (that there isn't other dogs ;) ).

Our Curly will stay no matter what. We can be outside and another dog can walk right past and all I have to say to her is "mind your own business" she won't move. We don't know how we got so lucky with her. I have never had a dog growing up that could ever be off a leash. We only put her on a leash if we go for walks or if we are aorund traffic, just to be safe.

There is a big open field where we take our dogs to run and play.
I've never chained my dogs and I have a fenced yard. They are free to roam. We have worked with our dogs a lot. That's the key! It pays off! I've had people ask me how I keep my dogs from running off also. I think if they get plenty of exercise they are less likely to run off and they are not so rambunctious. A good run before a walk is good also. They are less likely to take you walking! There is nothing better than a dog who listens to commands. Some good dog treats and you can get them to do most anything.

Mine stay close to me. They want to be where I am. Hook has never run off, he isnt interested in any other people or dogs...he wants to be where I am. Dayla is getting better...we have been going to classes and learning how to come when called and she is getting pretty good at it.

My trainer raises and shows German Shepards for Schuz (cant remember exactly how to spell it) and he demonstrated with his show dog the last class. He threw the dog's kong across the yard (about half a football field) and when the dog picked it up he called DOWN and the dog laid there and watched us the entire class. When we asked him when the dog would move...he said COME and the dog ran right to his left side. AMAZING!

I must say I complain about Monty's need to say hello to other dogs while off lead but Run away, never .

The only time he is off lead is in a safe envirement, although this can mean 3 miles of fields and woods. He will always run to say hello to any dog but unless it's very playful, usually comes back within a couple of minutes. If we are out and there are no dogs about he rarely strays as far as 10 yards away. He always keeps an eye on me and if I change direction he's back there with me.

However there is no way I would ever trust him out on the open road. I cringe every time I see someone with a dog off lead walking on the road side. It only takes once, to regret it, who knows what may suddenly make a previously obediant dog to suddenly take off.

a lot of it has to do with training but also a lot has to do with the individual personality of the boxer. Samus sounds like your pup, CRAZY!!! Would run all day lond. but Max is very calm and doesnt stray at all, except when he wants to go play in the backyard, then he just runs to the gate door and sits there until we open it...
