Sorry to hear the news about Lily. I've had some experience in heart disease iin both dogs and cats. Holden had the typical BCM and was diagnosed at the age of 4 years. He appeared and acted perfectly healthy. The vet picked up the irregular heart beats at a routine checkup. Holden had the Holter Moniter and was put on Solatol. That was in January 2002. The following August he underwent ACL surgery and recovered quickly. He just collapsed while walking and was gone. That happened on April 30th of last year. I can think of no difference in his behavior or eating or exercise patterns leading up to his death. It was just a normal day and walk and he was gone. He lived over two years from the time of diagnosis.
My long haired cat Lewis suffered from an enlarged heart. He was in congestive heart failure when the vets and cardiologist finally saw what was wrong. L ewis, unlike Holden, had other health problems at the time of diagnosis, mainly irritable bowel disease. He was given 6 months to live, but Lewis fooled them all and lived nearly 6 years longer. He passed one year ago yesterday of renal failure. He took a diuretic and Vasotec all those years. The experience I had with Lewis made me optimistic about Holden's prognosis. But the outcome was not as good. Heart disease of any kind whether dog or cat or person is just a time bomb. No one knows but the odds are in your and Lily's favor with the meds and the research.
I wish the best for the both of you. Keep a routine, one as stress free as possible, stick to the prescribed meds and make each day a good one.
