Rude, REALLY rude!

Like others have already said, please be careful around this man. There are some real nutters out there and it doesn't take much to spark them off.

Sorry if I sound paranoid but the thought of encountering a person like that on a hiking trail on my own would scare the crap out of me. The mace sounds like a good idea and perhaps avoiding the area on your own for a while would put him off being nasty to you again.

I too would be wary arround this man. It's not acceptable but if kids are out with a dog you could expect them to say "It's not my dog etc".
I went through this when Monty was a puppy. Alot of teenagers hung arround a field with a dog that was labelled "MAD JACK".
I took to carrying a big stick with me, but eventually I found out who the dogs owner was and after words these teenagers were not allowed out with the dog again.

Only this morning my sister and I met an absolute idiot with three dogs. The two big ones were on a lead but the viscious one a springer spaniel was loose. It first had a go at Monty, now a hefty 70 pounds. He and Sophie were on the lead as we were on a lane with traffic going up and down. It took all my strength to hold Monty back. It then went and bit his 45 pound sister Sophie. The owner just said "OH, he's such a sod but I can't control three of them on a lead. After a few choice words from us he then got very defensive and said, "Well I've never seen you here at this time before". As if this is an excuse. No dog should be off a lead except in a safe enviroment and certainly never if it is aggressive in any way.

Figures....agressive owners make for agressive dogs.......sad very sad........he will get his im sure! one day that guy is going to mouth off to the wrong person and POW.....hes going to get it right in the kisser

I am sorry to hear that. I am absolutley peeved off just reading it. I tell marq all the time it's a good thing that I dont own a gun. People are so rude. I have often gotten into yelling matches with people because I am not one to keep my mouth shut. I would meet the man again without my pup, and have a little heart to heart with him. I know most people would disagree and I probably shouldn't do half the stuff I do beacuse it is not safe but my temper gets the best of me most of the time. Anyways perhaps calling animal control or the police might be a better approach to it rather than my personal approach. Best of luck and let us know how it turns out.

I would definitely inform animal control, and even the police. This is something that you don't want to leave unattended.

I dont think the police will do anything....because he didnt physicaly harm her or the dog....its always worth a try.........

yesterday there was this dog that was running in and out of traffic and people that were walking by didnt even stop to help,,,my hubby turned the vehicle around and i ran out into traffic and called the dog.... he can running to me scared to death...we didnt know what to do so we called the police....they rudley told us...it wasnt thier problem and to call animal control.....I WAS SO MAD....if the dog caused an accident it would have been thier problem.....while we were waiting for animal control the owner came home grabbed the dog and said BAD DOG and said "this dog always does that " me and my husband thought "No wonder".....horrible owners..........anyway im just saying the police are really no help in these situations...at least thats what we have found

He sounds rude and also not a real good owner for the dog since it souds like he has no control of the dog or hasn't cared to train the dog right. Maybe he is just an %^$$*(&*&&( hole. Good luck on your walks.:confused:

Totally Irresponsible

What a complete jerk!!! I know that stomach-churning feeling, when you see the other dog approach, yours obediently sitting and waiting...a sitting duck. Then the other person acts like he owns the area he's in, that it's not public property. That's why I always have Diablo on the lead in high traffic areas. If I recognize the other dog's owner, or they look friendly, O.K. to play. If not, we move quickly on.

I don't know if this is an option or not, but it's a suggestion. And it shouldn't be up to you to have to change your routine. But if you are walking your dog at the same time everyday, and meeting this ^%$$#@!* at the about the same time, you might consider walking a little earlier or a little later in an effort to avoid him.:(

As for the mace (since a gun is not an option for the man or beast), be careful and check your local laws. I am a Deputy Sheriff. And although it is legal to carry mace in Ohio, it may not be where you live.

I agree with an earlier post who suggested that you contact your dog warden or animal control officer. They might be willing to "take a walk" with you someday.

Good luck..Be careful..If this guy is as rude and uncaring as you say, he may not be to good to "accidentally" release his dog.

I agree, I would change the time you walked. I mean it does make you mad that you would have to change your routine because of someone else's inconsideration, but it will only keep you and your furbaby safe. I think we all have encountered situations where we have to change our route or routine on a walk because someone else doesn't do what they should, but the alternative is getting our babies hurt and that is just plain not worth it. Maybe you'll even find a better route, plus I wouldn't want to be alone and meeting up with this guy on some trail. Just do whatever will provide you both with happiness and forget about people as small as this guy. I think it's possible to let people really get to you and change your attitude about everything, for instance we have nice neighbors on all sides of us except directly behind us. They literally change the quality of our life, but I am trying my hardest to ignore and get by that. Same with this guy, if you let him get to you then some illiterate, uneducated man has gotten the better of you and your pup. Plus, like we all know, if that guys dog ever did get into your baby, it has lasting effects and takes a long time to get over, if at all. So good luck, keep you both safe and maybe someday HE'LL stop walking there. Maybe ask a police officer if he would walk up there when this guy does, they might not do anything, but the guy may be more in line just knowing he's around, you know?
