Red/brown on white nails- normal?

You stated that Blizzy's nails would do that? Did you do anything for them or they just changed back periodically.

I never did anything to change them back. I tried one time just dragging my nail down hers where it was that brown/reddy color to see if it would come off but it didn't. They just changed back periodically. It was very strange to say the least.

Now looking back (hindsight IS 20/20) I think it was her food as before BW I didn't realize that the food she had been raised on for years was junk..Iams...:eek: But Blizz never did chew or lick at her feet and never really did show any signs of food allergies. Once I got to BW in Nov..it was too late.she was gone in December :(

It's supposedly a fungus that makes them turn that color. If you Dremel their claws, you can scale it off pretty easily, which I do before Miss Holly goes to a show. Otherwise, I think it's pretty harmless.

MXR, actually, I don't think it was the vet. I think I found the info on the internet. I assumed it was a normal yeast too but noticed that it went away when we did a food change (for her allergies) and she stopped licking and chewing obsessively with the change as well. I thought it meant there was a relation. But based on how many have the red nails with no symptoms I am sure it is harmless.

I got the advice to change her food here

Thanks for the info. I have always fed them Canidae and Samantha does not have that on her nails and Syd is only a little over 4 month's. I will keep an eye on them.

I've read that the coloring can be caused by fungus.

we had the same problem recently. the vet said it was fungus. and it was itchy, Keeroff was biting his nails 2 days before they turnt into that colour. and he was still biting them. the vet said i should sink the paw into betadine. and i was giving human anti-fungus pills too. one of the two problematic nails was cut in half also. later, a month maybe, they were back to normal. i dont know if betadine or the pills helped, or if the problem went away just by the time...
