I also posted this in the Introductions but thought it might get more action here...

Is the boxer breed so different and unique with his/her traits? What I mean is everyone on this board has nothing but positives to say about the dog. Its athletic, a protector, great with kids, completely family oriented and even though its a larger dog, its a great indoor pet. I haven't looked, but are there other sites dedicated to other breeds that talks as highly of their dogs as you? If I didn't know better, the boxer seems to be the perfect breed. My sister tells me just how human like her boxer is. I have never heard owners of say Labs or retrievers describe their dogs this way.

What is your input?

Thanks,
will

Well, I have never found any dog-related message board that's as good as this one. (Thank you Olly!)

I personally do think boxers are a perfect breed...I don't think there is a perfect breed out there...but boxers are the perfect breed FOR ME. I think most people who get them are looking for the specific personality and physical traits that they have, so they end up being very happy with them and rave about them. But it's not the right dog for everyone out there. One characteristic that some people would see as a flaw is that they do want a lot of attention. My husband, for example, is not really a boxer person (he just got stuck with one when he married me!). He would prefer a calm dog that will sit quietly at his feet instead of the active, attention-seeking dog that we have who wants to play and be where ever we are all the time.

Well for me, and I'm sure that there are tons of others here that feel the same, but the "boxer" is the perfect breed for me. If you read some of the stories and other posts here in the forums, you'll decide if the boxer is right for you. Don't just jump into it, I'd hate to hear sometime down the road, how it's not the right one for you. It's more of a personal (or personality) choice. Make sure you are completely sure.

But there is no question, that once you fall in love with a boxer baby, you'll have a forever loving friend who loves you back, just as much. You'll be able to tell when they slobber all over your face for kisses, lol

Take a look at the Boxerworld Home page: Here is a few tidbits:

A laugh a minute, lives life to the fullest, a maximum velocity version of canine slapstick. But he is also a sympathetic soul, a shoulder to cry on, a confidante. He is all that is good in a dog.

If your boxer chases flies
Or gives those heavy sighs
Soulful eyes to view you sadly
Before kidney beaning madly

Maybe jumps high in the air
Sleep and snore without a care
With a faith that is unerring
Despite what is occuring

If he loves you like a child
And is sometimes just as wild

I have a Yorkie that is 8.5 years old he is totally a puppy still. I was so happy with him then hubby wanted a boxer. We got Oskar and I have never been happier. Even our Yorkie is different. He is more playful and happy! I can't wait to get home to play with them. They both have added so much to our lives it's unbelieveable.
Oskar is just so silly it's hard to explaine he isn't a dog he's a person on 4 legs. If you had one you would totally understand! There's just so much to list. If you've taken a look at all of our stories you get the idea! We will definatly be joining the two boxer ranks soon!

Completely Boxer Crazy
My opinion is YES they are great dogs. Loyal, brave, goofy, strong, cuddly, just overall exactly what I wanted in a dog.
But I really don't believe the boxer is for everyone.
The boxer is VERY energetic, needs lots of exercise. They can be quite a handful too. They always seem to be getting themselves in to trouble, so they need a watchful eye. They are very intellegent, this could be a good thing but could also be negative.
I see that many people have problems with training with their boxers. Jumping on people is a big concern for many who own boxers. I have been working with my own boxer (Harley) since he's been about 4 months old and although he is making progress, he still tries to jump on anyone who passes by (not everyone likes to have a 60 lb puppy on top of them as they enter a doorway).
They are also difficult to leash train (again this depends on the individual dog and the experience of the trainer). Harley still tries to pull me down the street when we take a walk.
Some people may not appreciate the boxers flatulence. They tend to be a gassy breed :p. Not everyone finds humuor in this.
They are people dogs and will follow you around your home if bored. Some people don't appreciate being followed around by a whiny dog.
I'm sure there are many more traits that some people would think are not very attractive in the breed, right now I can't think of any more.
I think when choosing a dog breed you should choose to fit your lifestyle and personality. Many people choose a dog breed because it "looks cool/or tough". I know people like these and they usually end up regreting their choice.
I chose the boxer because I believed it was the right breed for me. And like any dog breed they have their good and bad attributes.

Oh believe me, most folks with a breed they love are just as passionate as us :) And we all know there are less-than-desirable sides to our breed. But those that have a true fit in their Boxer simply chose the right breed for them. I love dogs. But there are some breeds I just know would not work for me. Thankfully I did my research before getting my first Boxer and it was definitely the right choice for me :)

Boxer Buddy
Laila is only 4 months old, but she does just about every one of the traits I've read about on this site. I read alot before deciding that a boxer was for me, but I'm still surprised every day when she does something that I've read about here at BoxerWorld. I've had other breeds as a child, but never one that has so many different, distinct, funny qualities as the boxer. Definately listen to what everyone has said, they aren't for everyone. She definately can be a handful sometimes but she has so many more qualities that make up for that.

She is such a special dog & everyone that I've met that has or knows a boxer always says what wonderful dogs they are (and that doesn't include everyone here at BoxerWorld!) and I definately agree.

Super Boxer
I did a LOT of internet research when we where trying to decide what dog would fit into our family, and did NOT find any other board for a breed that had as passionate a following as this one does. It was this board that clinched the idea of a boxer for me. We ended up with TWO boxers and haven't regretted it a day since!!

Growing up my parents always had akc registered labs. My husband growing up always had muts as family pets. He couldn't see why you would pay money for a dog when you could get one for free and they would do the same thing. Tyson is 5 months old now, and just this weekend I heard hubby tell his dad that we would never own any other breed of dog. I guess his mind was changed quickly. My advice to you is to visit with breeders and spend time with the boxers. Stay for a couple of hours. You will get to see the personality that these dogs are notorious for. And then decide if its a personality that fits. That's what I did, and I left the breeder's that day wanting a boxer so much, and a couple of months later I had one.

I think just like everything else, if people like what they have, they are going to boast about it, and here at BW is where we get to boast about our boxers. I'm sure there are others site dedicated to dog owners, that boast about their favorite breed.
