Our baby Caesar is going to be Two in August.I know it should have been done sooner then this but better done late then never.I called to speak with my vet about the surgery. They said I would drop him off in the A.M. and the operation is done in the A.M.The vet would call me around noon to tell me about the surgery.I would not be able to pick him up until the following morning. The problem I have with that is that the everyone leaves the office by 8:30pm and don't return until 6:30 am.So now my baby would be unsupervised, uncomfortable in a crate that he hasn't had to be in since he was 6 mths old.I am now interested in what the normal procedure is? I would feel better if at least there was someone there overnight.I also live 2 minutes away from a Emergency Vets office that is open everynight ,all night .They are also open all weekends and holidays.I am about to call another vets office to see what their procedure is.If anyone has gone through this I would like to hear from you.thanks,Trisha

My boy was neutered before I got him, but from what I've heard from others, it's not unusal for them to stay overnight (I don't know if it's always the case, though). Like you, I'm also bothered by the fact that it's so routine for pets to have overnight stays after surgery at facilities where no one is around.

When my lab was neutured, he was suppose to stay overnight. However, he also, has not been in his crate for a very long time (since 6 months, at the time of neuturing was 2). He was hurting himself so bad in the crate before everyone left the vets office, that they asked us to come and get him, but just to keep an eye on him. My boxer is now 8 months and hasn't been in a crate b/c he hurt himself so bad in it, that we just had to let him roam the house, so I'm afraid that this may also be the case w/ him. Sooo, I don't believe that it's unusual for the dog to be kept overnight, but I don't agree w/ it either!

My boy (minpin) never had to stay overnight at the vet, he was 6 months. I dropped him off in the morning and picked him up that evening. My girl (boxer - 6 months) stayed overnight, but our vet went in and checked on her around 11 or 12 and then someone was back first thing in the am. After surgery, all they will want to do is sleep anyway because of the sedation and simply feeling really icky. Your baby will be just fine. You may want to speak with the vet and let them know that you are uncomfortable with your boy spending the night. Let them know you would prefer to take him home the same day and you will ensure that they are closely monitored and kept comfortable at home. If they have a problem with that, call another vet. My vet only does what I am comfortable with, they are after all our babies! right? Good luck and speedy recovery to Caesar! Poetic Thing

My puppy is 9 weeks old and when I first brought him home last week I took him to the vet. The vet told me that when he comes in for his neuter, his standard procedure is to keep the pup overnight. My vet back in VA that I had for my two pugs required that they stay overnight after their neuter/spay as well. The vet here that I took my pup too is a single man operation. He's the only vet, so I doubt there is anyone there at night. I haven't decided for sure that I'm going to use him for the neuter though. I already paid for the puppy package as far as getting all his shots and microchip, but I might take him to a vet that was recommended on Bulldogworld.com for his neuter. But, the procedure might still be to keep him overnight. I'd rather not leave him, but its only a night and he'll sleep most of the time anyway and mine is used to being in a crate at night, so hopefully he'll be fine.

So anyway, my point was that it seems to be pretty standard for a lot of vets to keep them overnight, but I'm sure you could probably take him home if you ask the vet, or find a vet that doesn't require an overnight stay if you really don't want to leave him overnight.

Thank you all for your stories. You see he is our baby.We have three children(11,9,6) and no other animals but Caesar. He sleeps in our room and mostly our bed.I let him out late at night before I go to bed.I think it will be stressful enough to be operated on and be gone from us all day.So, I think I will be looking for another vet.( at least for this surgery).I am also a stay at home mom, and now that my youngest child was in school full day this year, it was just me and Caesar all day( minus errand time). We are going on vacation in sept, my father in law will be staying here with caesar while we are gone. thats why I want this done soon.I want him back to normal as soon as possible. So, I want to thank you all again for your help,Trisha
