Puppy from Pet store

Just a question from experienced dog owners. We are getting our Austin this friday. I am so proud that we did all of our research and are getting him from a great breeder here in MA. They are taking him for his 2 set of shots tomorrow so he will be all vacinated and everything for us to bring home. My question is, one of my friends just bought a Mini. Daschund (spelling??) from a pet store. Don't know where they got it from for all I know it could be worse or not as bad as I think it is, when thinking about the conditions and stories about pet stores!! So, when they first bought the tiny little guy my first reaction was to introduce our little two this weekend, obvoiusly pay close attention b/c the mini. weeny dog is probably tiny. Should I be concerned about diseases and other things from this pet store pup even though our dog should be completely vaccinated from everything. I wish I could have talked to them about getting a pup from a pet store but they did it very "spur of the moment". any suggestions on whether it is a good idea for these two to meet this weekend?

I would wait until all dogs are fully vaccinated and theres no chance of catching anything serious. Especially with the other pup comming from a pet store I would have them take it to the vet ASAP to make sure he doesnt have anything that can be passed to yours.

Definitely would not allow any of my dogs to play with a pet store pup until they were completely done with all their vaccinations and the pet store pup had passed the amount of incubation time for various illnesses. There are plenty of communicable diseases that we don't vaccinate against.

This is not to attack the poor pet store pup. For HIS own health and safety he should be watched carefully and defended against infections he might pick up from other animals. His immune system is likely not strong.

They'll still be happy to meet and play a couple of months from now. Wait it out.

I would have to say not to let your baby and your friends baby play just yet...even tho your puppy will be given his first set of shots doesn't mean that he can't get sick with Parvo or Caccidia...since your puppy will be several months old before he is fully vaccinated I would definatly wait until then (at the least) before I would take him around ANY other puppies or adult dogs...and definatly don't take him to places like Petsmart where other animals are until he has had all of his shots....Also, be careful when taking him to your vet (hold him or have him in a crate) because obviously there are sick animals there...As you can tell I'm a very protective mom :rolleyes: and I tend to worry about my babies a lot (both skin & fur babies )....but I can also tell you that my 5 mos old boxer (Keno) has not been sick one day since we got him home almost 3 mos ago (so I must be doing something right!)
IMO, it's always better to be safe than sorry !

thank you all so much for your input. I was worried about it after I thought about the chance of our new baby getting sick. I think we may just take him for a few fun trips to an open park so that he can take a look around... no other dogs though.. hehe. Thanks for all of your help... Friday can't come fast enough!

Just a for an example for you, my sister got a mixed puppy from a puppy rescue and that very weekend we introduced her puppy (Bailey) with Tyson. Mind you my sister had already taken her to the vet and she received an clean bill of health. A couple of days after they left Tyson started coughing a deep, rough, cough. I called my sister and she said Bailey was doing the same thing. Well I took Tyson to the vet and she took Bailey, turned out Bailey had given Tyson kennel cough. Bailey's just hadn't shown up yet when she went to the vets the first time. Turned out both of us needed to put our dogs on antibotics. and turns out we both learned our lesson on introducing dogs too quickly. Thought this might help with your decision.

I would definitely wait a few weeks just in case the other pup has any health issues.

So true. I had this experience many years ago. Puppy was a healthy 12 week old. Took her to the vet for 2nd set of shots, she was laying on the floor. Two days later, she was very sick...parvo. That was a hard lesson on me, but my last 3 babies feet have not touched the floor until they were too heavy for me to hold. Butch and Harley lived to be 11 1/2 years, and my little Bo is only 3 1/2 months.

I agree on keeping the puppies apart until all shots are done, and the little mini dachsund has gotten a complete vet check. Also, another thing to think about is taking your little one to the park right away, even though he's just had his shots. Check with your vet first. When Grunt had his final shots, his vet told us to stay away from public places for a couple of weeks, just to be on the safe side, including parks or other places where dogs might go. Plus, we live in a condo development close to a wooded area, so we even had to put off potty training him outside because of critters possibly roaming through and leaving droppings. Better to take the extra precautions in the beginning when our babies are so vulnerable.

I agree! Plus those first months until they get their shots fly right by anyway... he'll be all ready to play before you know it.
