It's been a few years since I posted - I've been enjoying a wonderful life with my boy, Mason, who is now 6.5 years old. Two months ago we discovered a fatty lipoma in his rear right leg and the vet advised that we have it taken out in case it caused lameness. Unfortunately when they went to remove it, the vet found that it was a very rare inflitrative lipoma that had wound around the muscles. The plan was to treat it with radiation. At every turn though it got worse and when they did the CT scan to plan the radiation treatment, they found that it was up against the pelvic bone and if it went through that, it would be catastropic and I would lose my boy. Immediate amputation was recommended. This was last week. I was able to find the most incredible vet, Dr. Walsh, up in Loomis, CA who had a lot of experience with this kind of lipoma and he moved his schedule around to fit us in on Thursday and did the surgery on Mason and I know he did everything he could to try to save his leg. After two hours he had to admit defeat as trying to remove the lipoma was doing more damage and so he amputated. I brought Mason home on Friday and he has amazed me in how quickly he is recovering - far faster than I am! He's only lifted the wrong leg to pee a couple of times and has trouble lying down as he circles the wrong way and comes down on the wound. Dr. Walsh did a great job in reconstructing the hip and if you were looking down on Mason or from the opposite site, you wouldn't even notice. Of course, if you saw him from the front, you'd just see that gorgeous boxer face and nothing else! We have a long road ahead with radiation to make sure there are no microscopic traces of the lipoma, but his prognosis is excellent and I am constantly being told (and shown by Mason) that three legged dogs adjust incredibly well. It breaks my heart to see him at the moment, just because I have to make that mental adjustment, but I am so blessed to still have my gorgeous boy with me. I'd love to hear from anyone else though who has gone through anything similar as, even though I know I've done the right thing, it would be great to hear other success stories of our incredible babies adapting. Please keep my boy in your prayers!

Sending loads of vibes and prayers for a continued recovery.
Growing up my neighbors dog (Golden Retriever) named Mindy pretty much lived at our house. Their children were grown and we had 3 kids over at my house. She had been hit by a car and lost her leg when she was pretty young. She was just like any other dog, she had no problems at all adjusting to it.
I think it is harder on us (the parents) than it is on them.

Sending healing vibes and wiggles from me & SuzyQ - I also remember a neighbor who had a 3 legged dog and you really wouldn't know it - he ran around with us kids like it was nothing. I'm sure Mason will do wonderfully well.
