I'm glad to hear that Ginger's inital diagnosis is negative. That's a good start. At least maybe you can relax a little more now that the first diagnosis is negative. Don't worry...Colby and Skye will keep their wiggles and kisses coming your way!!

we're stumped....

Well, all of Ginger's test results are back. They came back negative for cancer and negative for any type of infection. It's really GREAT news, but we have NO IDEA what is causing her leg bones to deteriorate. ??? The biopsy showed zero abnormalities... absolutely nothing.

So now what??? I'm frustrated and scared and I have no idea what to do now! My vet is really floored that nothing came back on the biopsy. He said that he really has a gut feeling that it could be cancer, that maybe he just didn't get a good biopsy. OR he said it could be from some type of trauma, compromising her blood supply to the bone. Let me add that my vet is great, and I really trust him, but I can't stand not having an answer. He still thinks amputation is the best solution.

Should I take her somewhere else???? Get another opinion?? I'm afraid if I do, they'll want to do another biopsy, and I'm not putting her through that again. ARGHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what to do?!?!

Thanks for letting me vent... I just love her so much and want to do what's right for her... I just don't know what that is! Thank you all for your prayers and for listening!

I would certainly get second opinion before I would consider an amputation. I am sending positive healing vibes your way!

Yes, I agree. A second opinion sounds a good idea. I'm sorry you're no closer to finding out what's going on. It must be so frustrating for you. Sending lots of positive vibes your way and wiggles from Spud. Hope you get some answers soon.

second opinion (sorry, it's long...)

Hi all, and thanks as always for your thoughts and prayers and support. You all are right, of course I MUST get another opinion on Ginger. I called another local vet today and we have an appointment on Thursday. I don't know if this vet is the best choice, but he raises boxers (or he's had a ton of them). So I'm sure he is quite aware of their health concerns (he lost a boxer to cancer). In fact, he was my vet when Ginger and Dexter were puppies. I always liked him... he was just too far away from my house. We ended up moving away (out of state), and when I moved back (6 years later) I chose my current vet who is closer to my home.

So I went to pick up her records and x-rays today after work. My vet most graciously gave them to me, and encouraged the opinion. I cannot say enough, that I really TRUST and value my vet--I hope you all trust yours just as much. He is not in this for the money, and I have a lot of respect for him.

I also asked him if I could try something with Ginger. It's called "myopulse"... it's kinda like accupuncture/electrolysis. It is supposed to stimulate blood flow, promote healing and ease pain with very mild/painless electric pulses. It's used a lot in the equine world as well as on people for physical therapy. My vet said that it would be ok to try. He doesn't do those treatments, but I know someone who does. So I'm going to call tomorrow and get her an appointment.

Thanks again to you all for listening.

a small bit of advice...

Firstly, I want to tell you how much I sympathize with your situation. I thought I was the only one who always got the "we're stumped" problems. But if I've learned anything, it's to trust your gut. If what the vet is telling you doesn't compute in your head, you have to keep taking her to different vets until one has an answer. One will have an answer.... it's just all about finding the right one who will really dig and spend time on it and talk to their peers and ask other vets and hit the books! When one is stumped, you've got to move on to the next!

I am glad to see that the test were negative. I live in Louisiana too. We just got second opinions on Samson and Delilah from LSU. I am so glad we took them there. Delilah was seen at the LSU vet school 3 years ago for what my vet thought might be cancer. He refered us to the vet school. They were great, and it was not cancer. I hope you get a second and even a third opinion until you have peace of mind.
