Brian brought the paste home (Pro Pectin) and we gave her the first dose of 5mg. and she can have another at midnight. I have continued to give her small meals of rice and chicken and she has been outside three times to pee with no trips onto the grass, so I would say that is a good sign. Josi's oncologist also called me back tonight which helped me alot. She said before we start talking I have to say that I was shocked when I heard your voice...that Josi's is something else~just unbelievable! She said as far as the diareaha goes, if it is dietary than the pro pectin will work like a charm with the bland diet...she said if she is still experiencing discomfort tomorrow than she probably has a bout of colitis from the stress and shock her body was under and she would call in a script to my hospital pharmacy for (metatrophizine??totally messed that up, but I can't remember how she pronounced it) anyhow she said this should then do the trick. It is very nice that Brian and I both work at a hospital b/c we are able to get all these human drugs that they prescribe to Josi for extremely reasonable prices.
So going onto to our discussion about her bleed. I asked her if she thought the transfusion saved her life or did she just get lucky? She said most likely the transfusion did save her life combined with the fact that her bleed most likely slowed or stopped as well. She said otherwise the transfusion would have just seeped out too. I asked her if these transfusions are a viable option to temporarily combat these bleeds? She said we will have to find that answer within ourselves. She said do I have clients that treat with this method for a few bleeds...yes - with the understanding that with each transfusion the risk for reaction increases and simply the transfusion may just not be enough. She also said while it shouldn't be a decision factor, Josi has a terminal illness and every transfusion she receives from a donor dog could be taking away from a dog that may really need it and is not terminal. She said we also have to figure in the cost and the fact that Josi would have to be hospitalized for a day and most importantly quality of life. She said if Josi has another good 3-4 weeks is it a viable option, I would say yes if that is your decision, but if Josi only goes a few days than you have to ask yourself what are we doing and what is fair. So now we have new questions and new decisions, but we just can't go there right now. We know if her heart is bleeding we will not have it tapped and how we feel about possible transfusion after this one...we just don't know, the doctor's only suggestion was to have it figured out before another episode b/c she said once you are in the moment and emotions are running high, one tends to do anything in their power to help our beloved pets.
And finally I discussed with her the issue that my local vet will be out of town for a week and I am not a fan of the other two vets. She assured me that she and the other wonderful doctors that we have met are here for us. She said that she checks her voicemails at least once daily on the weekends as long as she is not out of town so she would always be happy to come in if we thought Josi was ready. Ok enough on that...well keep your fingers crossed we are still liquid poo free and thank you for all the help and support today. As always I will keep you posted
