You might feel like you should just let it go and forget about it but seriously, you SHOULD write to their corporate office and complain. Like everyone else is saying, he was completely unprofessional and most definitely deserves some kind of action against him. He can think what he wants, but to say it out loud and in earshot of the customer - that is just terrible, and calls for discipline from his company!

And if nothing is done by the company, you can atleast feel better about the fact that you'll make him feel like a complete A$$ about saying what he said. He will feel so stupid and embarrassed, and he'll think twice next time before judging somebody he knows nothing about! You can save some future customers the same ordeal.

So sorry you had to go through that, after all the love and care you give your baby.

Grrrr what an idiot!!!!!!!

Its definitely the best option to call the corporate office and report him, then you hit him where it REALLY hurts... good job for keeping your cool- if it were me and my bf he would have freaked out and gotten us arrested or something! Kudos to ur wife for stopping you- I know that can be really hard!

Took the words right out of my mouth! I in fact would write the corporate office of this "national pet store" and file a complaint. It is completely unprofessional for this manager to make comments such as these about customers ........ ESPECIALLY IN EAR SHOT!

I agree with Silverstar & ISUBoxer 110% !!!
This person should not be able to get away with such behavior.
I would write a letter to the corporate office and a separate letter to him at the store. Also with his letter I would enclose a copy of the complaint letter sent to the corporate office.
People like that make me so mad.
Thank you for rescuing Max. You sound like a very caring boxer parent:)
Good Luck!

Well you love your dog and obviously take very good care of him. Just feel sorry for that man that he makes such assumptions about people. It's his loss and there is no cure for being stupid and he has to live the rest of his life with that problem while you have your sweet boy to love! Looks like you come out ahead=)

If it was me I'd have said something =x And it probably wouldn't have been very nice!
I agree Vela.....I probably would have called him and idiot or something worse! Then asked him for his psych degree! People probably think I've trained Sapphire to be mean. She won't let anyone in the house without my approval unless she already knows them, she will growl an bark at anyone else! Guess she's just protective.....which I like!

It's always wrong to make assumptions like that, but it is even worse to make them out loud! He should have spoken to you so he could have learned the story.

Toffee has been with me since she was 10 weeks old, and I take her with me (or my parents take her with them) as often as possible. She isn't comfortable being approached by a stranger and petted though--that is just her personality, because I know she's never been hit.

I think you should write to the store as well, simple because this was very unprofessional behavior and was very upsetting to you.

I like the suggestion to print out the pages and send them into the corporate office, I would also identify whom the manager was by name, so if there is any action taken they will know exactly whom to address.
On the other hand, I would not have been able to keep silent at the time. I would have set the "manager" straight right there on the spot !
It would have been a great opprotunity to do some education of the "manager" and the staff.

I agree with many other posts...get a hold of head office and report the Manager. In a position as such, it is his responsibility to professional. After hours, away from customers he is entitled to his own opinion - but only then. Let the company know how this upset you and express that you would appreciate that he be reprimanded or disciplined at the very least. I would also let them know your business can be taken elsewhere (and I most certainly would). I'm so sorry you had to experience the ignorance of this person, you and your wife keep doing what your doing with Max - HE KNOWS what the real deal is :)

I have one dog who is the same way. He doesn't show any obvious signs of past abuse, but I think he was very poorly socialized in his early life. I try to be proactive and as soon as people to start to approach him, I let thim know that he is scared of strangers and ask them to just ignore him. I explain that often if people don't pay attention to him, he will approach them on his own and let them pet him but that he's intimidated by strangers making a fuss over him.

My other rescue definitely shows a few indications of being abused in the past. I hope that no one will ever imply that I'm the one did that, but if it does, I will try to ignore their rudeness and focus on what I know to be true - that I love both of my dogs and would never do anything to hurt either of them. I've worked very hard to improve the confidence level of both of my dogs, but I know they will always be a little timid and I just have to remind myself that it's not my fault and I'm doing all I can to help them.

I'm sorry you had such an unfortunate encounter. I'd be awfully tempted to send a letter to that manager explaining his mistake. Maybe that will make him think twice before saying something so stupid in the future.
