We have a 21 month old male named Max. Went to a national petstore this weekend and was accused by the manager of being mean to our boy. We purchased him at 7 months old. He is a healthy male, natural ears and we had him neutered and such. We brought him to our house from a couple who had him advertised in a local paper, he was very shy when we got him last year. The first three days he wouldn't eat or even come near us. Now he is our shadow and a joy, as he has always been. I am with him almost all the time as I am semi-retired, he follows me, sleeps with me and my wife and not trouble. He loves us and is totally spoiled, never been hit or yelled at but always shy with new people, terrified in fact. I have obedience trained him to sit, stay, shake, lay down, play dead, pray, etc. He loves kids in fact neighbor children will come over, they have dogs also to play with him. He loves people that he knows and is the complete loveable mug.

Went to the petstore to buy some toys and such for Xmas, the manager came up and tried to pet him and he backed up. As he does with all strangers except children. As we were checking out I overheard him speaking with an employee saying what a beautiful boxer too bad he is unhappy and probably beaten....well my wife calmed me down and I left. But am I pissed.

He may have been abused as a pup, but since we have had him and are childless he is a part of us and I would die before anything would happen to him.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this? I wish he was a little more friendly but he is so well behaved, we love it and him?

Just wanted to vent, but geez!

well cuddos to you for rescuing him!!!! if the manager had a brain, he would have talked directly to you. then, you could have told the story of him being rescued from a bad situation and how you are trying to socialize him.

Well you love your dog and obviously take very good care of him. Just feel sorry for that man that he makes such assumptions about people. It's his loss and there is no cure for being stupid and he has to live the rest of his life with that problem while you have your sweet boy to love! Looks like you come out ahead=)

If it was me I'd have said something =x And it probably wouldn't have been very nice!

Thank you very rescuing Max, he must be a joy!

I would imagine this "manager" was embarrassed that the dog didn't seem confortable with him, and to save face with his collegues he simply announced you must beat your dog.

Unfortunately, the stupid people in this world try to make themselves seem more important by putting other people down.

Br549- I also live in Bloomington Normal, and I assume I know which national pet-store you are talking about. I have only been there a few times and havent had any real problems, but if I were you I would be furious. I really think you should say something. Not only is it completely rude, its also terribly unproffesional for a manager to talk about his customers (the people supporting his job) negatively...not to mention that he did it in your presence! I would think twice before bringing your business back there again.

Sorry the manager made such a remark...:( It's sad that he assumes things like that. It sounds like you have a very sweet boy!

Took the words right out of my mouth! I in fact would write the corporate office of this "national pet store" and file a complaint. It is completely unprofessional for this manager to make comments such as these about customers ........ ESPECIALLY IN EAR SHOT!

Obviously this "manager" was an idiot, and like someone else said..probably trying to save face in front of his employees. I would definitely file a complaint with the corporate office, anywhere I am a customer...and don't feel I've been treated properly...I will complain to headquarters in a heartbeat! We are the reason for these companies...without customers..there is no business. And furthermore, this man obviously really knows nothing about dogs...you can't approach all dogs...some dogs come to you in their own time. It is obvious that your baby is well cared for, and that's what counts. I am sorry you had to endure this...but don't hesitate to complain either!

Someone said it in an early post about a small local pet store that was particularly knowledgeable and carring- they care about dogs and have the time, where at big chains, it's just a job.
You'd think with all the dogs they come in contact with, they'd realize every dog acts different. Alot of dogs I know are cautions about people before going up to them... it's like they look at your reaction first.

Sorry for your bad experience - I can imagine how upset you must have been when you overheard what the manager said - I would be, too!! Some people just don't have any sense, and it surprises me that the MANAGER of a PET store (supposedly knowing something about dogs) would approach and try to pet Max without asking you if it was OK first. Not all dogs are friendly or comfortable with strangers, particularly when approached so directly. Some are shy or cautious. Most people are very courteous when approaching Grunt, and ask if they can pet him. A few come head on, sometimes despite warnings that he will jump and pee on them. Heck, maybe Max knew exactly what he was doing when he backed away - maybe he just didn't want to be touched by that man!! Can't say that I blame him!
