My 3yr old male boxer has been diagnosed with Pancreatitis! We have to obstain from giving him any people food, too many treats and all dairy! Has anyone encountered this with their boxer? If so, what kind of food do you feed him/her? Any other advice?
Thanks!

Someone suggested the Wellness brand of Fish and Sweet Potatoes.

Or you could make his own foods?

I havnt experienced it but I hear it is easily controlled by diet. Good Luck.

Unfortunately, none of the pet stores in my area carry the "Wellness" brand :( I have him on Nutro Nature's Choice Reduced Fat for Large Breeds, and he seems to like it. I have to be careful too, because he gets seasonal allergies as well. I originally had him on Hills brand (right after he was diagnosed)........but its SOOOOO EXPENSIVE! I just cant see paying $35 for an 18lb bag of food!

Thanks for your input!

Wellness brands are available thru mail order at petfooddirect.com . We tried Hills with Molly and it made her allergies even worse. We have her on Azmira Lamb and she is doing GREAT!!! The wellness sweet potato was the other food we were going to try next if the Azmira didn't work out. Boxers are NOT a large breed dog and do not require large breed dog food. It can actually make them grow too fast causing arthritis and bone, joint problems. Boxers are a medium breed dog and slow growth is the best.

The premium foods do cost more BUT you feed your dog less because there aren't any fillers in the food. I go through 1 40lb bag a month and I have 3 large dogs eating it. I was going thru Iams every two weeks so it is actually more cost effective and better for your boxer.

Caesar has had a bout with it too. His lipase level was up to 4,000 (normal is 600) I switched him to Solid Gold Holistique Blendz last year and his level went down to 1,000 so far. It is made to be mixed with meat either cooked or raw so you can control the amount of fat and the type of protein you choose. Caesar still has on and off acid reflux and occasional upset tummy, since I can't seem to get my Mom (Lives with us now)to understand smashicon he can't have all sorts of goodies.
I have some information from 2 books and a pamphet my vet gave me. I could send it you if you would like to e-mail me.

Bailey (2 yrs old) has had Pancreatis as well and we have him on the Holtizue (sp) blend of Solid Gold as well, it's the one with the fish instead of meat. Boxer4 do you put meat with the diet or feed the Solid Gold alone? We feed it alone and he does just fine. I have been thinking of switching to the Wellness Fish & Sweet Pototoes though. My vet isn't much of a help she wanted him to be on Purina EN for the rest of his life - DON't think so!! We no longer feed table scraps either.

About the Wellness Fish and Sweet Pototoe isn't the fat content too high, I've been told to stay as low as possible and I believe that Wellness has around 11% and Solid Gold has 6%. Have you heard any of this?

Any information would be great!!

Thanks

Nedra has chronic pancreatitis as well. We tried Wellness Fish and Sweet Potato and she vomited it up immediately. We found that this food contains an ingredient called "Menhaden Fishmeal" which comes from a type of fish that has very oily meat. These oils aggeravated her pancreatitis even more.

Upon further searching, we found that all of the versions of Wellness had this listed as an ingredient except the Lamb. She has now been on the Lamb version for 2 years with solid stools, no vomiting and no other problems.

Good luck in finding something that works for you!

boxer17,
I have been mixing with lean raw ground beef or lightly cooked chicken, he doesn't do well on cooked beef and not well on raw poultry. I originally wanted to go with the Barf diet but he gulps bone down whole and it scared me too much so it has the be ground meat. I started out not mixing as much meat as the bag suggested as I was trying to keep the fat low. Now he get one meal with more meat and the later meal more kibble and sometimes a little cottage cheese, it seems to work for him.
With having 4 boxers this was the easiest way to go for all.

Chewy is 2 years old, and has chronic pancreatitis. We've had a tough time getting his under control. He also gets acid reflux, and indigestion occassionally and will vomit even though it's not caused by the pancreatitis. Very tough to keep weight on our boy.

At first we had him on Canidae, but he was vomitting *several* times per week. Switched to California Natural, and the vomitting reduced to maybe once a week - still not good enough. Our holistic vet put him on Hill's Z/D a couple months ago. He's been doing way better on this, vomitting maybe once every 3 weeks. We're supposed to start adding meat to it soon to try to find out if he's allergic to certain protein sources. Once we figure that out, we'll choose a new food accordingly, with a protein source that he can tolerate, and as low in fat as possible (looks like there's some good food suggestions above). 6-8% fat is nice and low. Our vet said we can give him a little people food here and there for a treat as long as it's fat free.

Did you decide which food you would use?

Please keep us updated on his condition.
