Have any of you been following the situation reguarding PA miners in Somerset PA who are trapped underground?

www.cnn.com

It is a terrible situation and the families of the trapped miners have been staying at the site watching the progress in the hopes they will see their loved ones again. :( If anyone knows anything about Western PA you know that it is a huge mining community and this is a nightmare that no one is ever prepared for.

I grew up in South Western PA and my dad was a coal miner. He always came home from work the dirtiest man I ever saw :p The only thing that was clean was his eyes where his goggles were. He was totally black from head to toe! He could of showered at the mine but he preferred to come home. He said he felt cleaner if he bathed at home :) My dad had a huge metal lunchbox! If you have ever seen a miner's pail it is huge and has multiple layers. My dad always packed an extra container of water and extra food along with his lunch. When I was younger I asked him why he packed some much food and he said "In case I get stuck Andie, me and the crew will have some things to eat." He never said trapped just "stuck". Like it would only be for a short bit then he would be OK. It wasn't until I was older that I fully understood what he meant and how risky his job was that he did everyday with no complaint.

I was wondering if we all could take some time and have our thoughts be with these families who so desperatly need some positive and optimistic vibes. Let's hope that their loved ones are OK and this nightmare will be over quickly.

I've been following this story as well, and have said (and will continue) many prayers for the miners and their families through this ordeal.

Yes, I have been following this story too. I hope they are able to get to these guys really soon. I can't imagine what their families are going through right now with the waiting. Hope all if fine once the rescue is complete.:)

Andie - I've thought of them often especially when I heard of the small space they are trapped in. Your father sounds like a wonderful man, is he still alive? So many miners died of lung ailments - it's horrible. This is one industry that could use some updating - miners going deep into the earth for coal - putting thier lives on the line every day - can't someone bring this job into the 22nd century? I would think there would be machinery that the miners could operate, making them safer. My prayers are with the miners and families.

Thank you all for your kind words :) Let's keep them coming for these miners and their families.

Yes my dad is still alive and kicking :p He worked in the mine for a long time and then the mine shut down as there was no more coal left. Most of my young life my dad was a coal miner. He has so many stories of his expierence. There were times when the power went out and all they had were the lights on their helmets. One time the buggy that takes the crew underground broke and my dad had to walk all the way back up  He never complained or even said he was nervous. I think that was to keep us calm though ;)

Andie - on my "breaking news tv" they have just contacted the miners on cell phones. I'm praying - please God let them all be alive. You should start a journal with your dad's miners' stories. I lost my dad last year (to cancer) and I wish I had a journal of all of his stories. We all think our dads will live forever.

Andie, I know we're along way away but we too have been following this story.
The great news, that I'm sure you are all aware of by now, is that all 9 are out & alive. :D
It was one of the lead stories on our 6 o'clock news.
It must've been such a terrifying experience for those men who were, as your dad would say, "stuck" & also for their families.
It was great to see them out. :D
