Hello,

We had to let our sweet 9 1/2 year old fawn boxer Capone go to the Bridge on 01/12/07. Our hearts are broken. He was healthy and happy until he started going downhill at the beginning of December. He seemed very confused one evening and couldn't remember how to sit or use his back legs to go down the stairs. He seemed fine the next morning, but then started having periods where he would just stare at the floor and not move his head. He was also losing weight. We took him to the Vet and after evaluating him he thought it was a cervical disk problem (xray) and he also heard a heart murmur which we were going to have evaluated. He was started on Deramaxx and it seemed to help him. He was pretty good until after Christmas (his favorite time). He would still have bouts of confusion and staring and his back legs started to get very weak. His blood work was normal. Was still eating well (his favorite human foods), but had stopped drinking as much water as he usually drank. He slept a lot. In my heart, I knew he was dying. We hugged and kissed and petted him as much as we could. Last week he started losing his balance and falling down. He started walking with his front legs spread wide apart and his back legs kept slipping. His disorientation was increasing. He lost control of his bowels 3 times last week. His chest xray showed a large mass in front of his heart and his heart was enlarged. Our Vet was 100% sure he had a brain tumor due to the neurological problems he was exhibiting. I looked into Capone's beautiful big brown eyes and I saw the light had gone out and we knew it was time for him to go. He went so peacefully in our arms while we were kissing and petting him and telling him what a good boy he was and how much we loved him. It was the saddest day of our lives. Our house is so empty and still without him. We haven't stopped crying. We will get his ashes back today. It will be a comfort to us. We have decided we will get another boxer when we're ready. We will never forget or stop loving Capone, our little furry boy.....

So sorry. I know the feeling, our house is so quiet without Emma. She left us on 1/10/07. Our only consoliation is that they are waiting on the other side.

I'm very sorry that you lost Capone. It must have been very difficult to watch his health decline so quickly. I don't know exactly what it is about these Boxer dogs that makes them such an integral part of our lives but I know they are. I also know about the silence that we experience when they leave us. It's pretty hard to take. Another Boxer certainly would not replace Capone. From our experience though, I can tell you that getting Molley really helped us to heal. She's different than Carley in so many ways but we've grown to lover her just as much.

My sincere best wishes and hugs to you and your family.

I am so sorry for your loss, we are still grieving the loss of our boy last week also. I know what you are going through and how empty and quiet things are.. We are thinking of you at this time.

Thank you all for your kind words and thoughts. My husband is having a difficult time at work today telling everyone of Capone's passing. Everyone there is crying. They loved Capone and loved hearing about all his funny Marmaduke type antics. They would stop by my husband's office constantly to check out any new pics of Capone and to get updates on him. They would always relay the stories to their families and they all felt he was a big part of their lives. It's amazing how much love Capone brought to everyone's lives, not just ours. He had so many friends ( dogs and humans) that just adored him. Even dogs who didn't like any other dogs seemed to fall for his charm and gentleness and became his buddy. When he would see small dogs, he would actually shrink his self down on his legs as he was walking toward them. It was like he didn't want them to be intimidated by his size. He had a lot of mothering qualities in him even though he was a male. And stuffed animals....I know everyone on the boards say how their boxers destroy them quickly. Not Capone. He had tons of them for years that he would play with so gently, never ripping any of them.. He liked the ones he could press on and they would make weird sounds. Everyone used to tell us that when they died they wanted to come back as Capone. He was truly a "Gentleman"....
