We brought Roxie home yesterday. We adopted her from a family in the military. Our breeder found her in the paper, the family was trying to sell her for $300. They couldn't sell her so they were going to take her to the pound and our breeder contacted us (knowing we are suckers when it comes to boxers, lol) and we of course took her in. Roxie is 2 years old. The owners lost her AKC papers, so no one wanted her. How dumb is that? Papers do not make the dog!

She is EXTREMELY underwieght, and the vet said she has gingivitis. How can I put some weight on her quickly? She only weighs 45 ponds soaking wet.

It is hard to imagine that they starved her. She is bascially polite. She comes when called, lays down, sits, and shakes hands. The best thing about her is she barks very loudly when someone knocks at the door. Our other two never would until Roxie came here. Silly dogs! I gather the military family were her second owners. They kept her crated almost all of the time. She has been spayed, so someone really cared at one point and time. She is also current on vaccinations, all we had to get her yesterday at the vet was Bordetella.

We now have three female dogs in the house. It is going suprisingly well.
I welcome any and all advice and pointers. She picks on Destiny, our 3 month old brindle, but not bad enough to worry much. After all this is only the second day.

Thanks for taking in a rescue. My female was 45 pounds and 2 when I got her. I do believe she was being cared for by her owners and foster parents, but was very anxious with all the changes. She put on about 10 pounds, but it took a while because she was so active too. Make sure she gets high quality food. There is food analysis link in the feeding forum that might give you some ideas.

Establish some ground rules early. If you let her get away with a little at first she will continue to test the limits.

I will research the quality food portion of this site, that is an excellant idea :o) We feed our other two boxers Diamond Puppy from the feed store. Also, we are defintaley laying down ground rules, but being very gentle at the same time. She isn't timid, but does startle easily. She does well with kids though for sure. My cousin popped in yesterday with her family. I was really nervous at first because it being the first day and her kids are little (2 and 5). The two year old kept poking at her tail and ears, we corrected the two year old and Roxie acted as if nothing had even happened. I was quite impressed!
I read something on the internet about a recipe called Satin Balls for dogs that need to gain quickly. I was wondering if anyone has used this or knows if it safe? My husband is freaked out because it contains raw meat and eggs. Here is the recipe:

10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.

Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.

Thaw as needed and feed raw!

Just wondering what yous thought about it before I try it.

Thanks again, you guys are always SO awesome!

Good job on the rescue. appicon Flash was the same way when we got him, very underweight and stattled very easily, he still does to an extent. That is actually why his name is Flash. He also barked at the door. He has botten better about it but not completely stopped. We never tried to break him of it because it is just a warning bark, not viscious and it seems to make him proud. Good luck and keep us posted please.
