I don't know if any of Cami's illnesses were/are caused by vaccines. I do know that she had her full set of puppy shots and that has been all. That being said she had terribly bad reactions to them (at least the ones that we had done after the breeder did the initial rounds). She did have a total of two rabies vaccines. One as soon as she was old enough and it was the "yearly" version. The 2nd was at age 1 and it was the "3 year version". No more of those either. Hard battle to get that OK'ed by the health
department though. YIKES! That is a story for another day.
I have been bombarded in recent days with information and my head is spinning. I learned (or was told by the cardio) that the same heart issue Cami has is seen often in dogs with thyroid problems. However.....she has Boxer cardiomyopathy (ARVC) and thyroid issues are common in Boxers. So one can look at it two different ways. It is a "Boxer thing" or there is some correlation between thyroid issues and a specific heart condition. I do know that her cousin (same grandfather) who is a year younger developed mast cell cancer. Then she developed thyroid issues. So far (knock on lots of wood) she has not shown any heart issues.
There are at least 50 different thyroid "symptoms". Any dog can have any of the symptoms. Cami didn't present as a "thyroid dog". She lost weight instead of gained and that was one of the things that her regular vet didn't want to wrap his head around. Her traditional thyroid tests were well within normal ranges. As far as her regular vet, her cardio and oncologist were concerned she did NOT have hypothyroidism. If I had not pushed for a full blood panel she would not have been diagnosed with thyroiditis. Two different labs verified this. I am glad I stuck to my guns. Once on meds it made a huge difference in her.
Cami didn't seem to make any progress today as she has been doing over the past week. I don't know if she didn't feel well but she certainly seemed a little gloomy. Still sleeping about 20 hours a day. I don't know how long to think that the sleeping and extreme tiredness can be attributed to her ordeal or medications...and not something worse. I myself am growing more and more tired with each day. It is so very hard to be totally consumed by one thing. Other areas of our lives (more so mine) are being pushed aside for another day. They will still be there when I have time to get to them.
She whined, pawed at me and pouted. It was AWESOME! She wanted a new bully stick so she got one. I have stepped on no less than 20 of those smelly things over the past few days. Fine by me. Just a constant reminder that my girl is still here with me.
My eyes are growing heavy and it is time for the last round of her meds for the day. Here is to an uneventful night and rest for us all.
