No muzzles for Boxers?

I've been looking into getting Ginger a muzzle for when we do her nails & such, only for temporary use. I checked into a store (Petsmart wanna be) and bought a basket muzzle. I ended up returning it b/c it was too big & got a size smaller. I ended up having to return that one too b/c as soon as she would put her head down it would fall off. I never brought her to the store to try them on b/c we have such a hard time getting one on her. The last time we returned the muzzle, the worker there said there is no muzzle that will work on a Boxer b/c of the way their ears are?? He said for most dogs, the ears is what holds the muzzle on. He also added they are only for temporary use (duh) and are not like Greyhounds who wear one for awhile. He said if the dog wants it off it will get it off. Okay, then why would anyone buy one then? I *thought* the basket was the best, b/c of the price & b/c the humane societies use them. The stores online show Rottweilers wearing them, I figured Boxer muzzels & ears weren't that different from a Rottweiler.
I know I don't know it all when it comes to Boxers, but I know there has to be a muzzle out there for Boxers that they can't get off in seconds. I think I have read on here before about some people using muzzles to do their dogs nails etc. What kind do you use? According to this guy, there is no muzzle for Boxers.

I have vague recollections of a similar thread in the past, and I think there were some good links posted in that one. You'd probably find that with a search using the term "muzzle" or "muzzles".

You can make your own muzzle by using a strong but non abbrasive fabric. You would lay it on top on the nose, wrap it around to the underside of the chin, cross the fabric and then take it back behind the neck. Remeber to use as little force as is needed and to tie a one sided bow so that you can get it off quickly.

We occasionaly have to use a muzzle for our 7 year old male boxer when we take him to the vet. We only need it for a few minutes when they are doing something invasive.

We use a cloth one (it's hard to find the right size as he has a real big squishy face.) He hates it, and we have to stand right there with him and hold his head to keep him from trying to get it off. It does work though for the few minutes we need it. As soon as they are done with whatever they are doing, we take it off.

We use a muzzle on Rocky... It's nylon and it works really well (you just can't leave it on for long periods of time)

That's exactly what the other muzzle is that I first bought before getting the $30 basket one. I paid $7 & it's much better than the basket one. It takes her about 15 secs to get this one off. I got the one with the boxer on it & it's too big & doesn't seem to fit her like a muzzle should fit a dog. I knew that guy was full of it, that tried to tell me they don't make muzzles for Boxers, then I find that one with a boxer on it! She can almost open her mouth all the way. Maybe when she gets a bit bigger it will fit her, she's 6 months old now.

Thank you all for your replies. I'm not in a big hurry now getting her a muzzle, but would like to find one before I get my hardwood floors put in so I can keep her nails trimmed. She does not like her feet getting touched! Thanks again!

I've always used the "Jafco" brand muzzle to great success.

Just google Jafco Muzzle and you should get some info.

Hi GinsMomma, I asked about muzzles a while ago and someone recomended the Miki Muzzle. It actually has a boxer size. Good luck!!!

I'm not trying to be rude or smart but I think it would be really worth the effort on getting her to let her feet be handled rather than muzzling. It's not just toenails also ticks and other foreign objects can get in the paws & between the toes. Its a somewhat arduous process to get them happy about the feet but worth it for the lack of probs later. I started by when I was giving Garvin a belly rub Id give him a bit of a massage all over then up the leg to the paw, all the while saying Good Boy, etc. Of course he would snatch away and growl at first, but i persisted and then i could massage his paw. Then check between his toes. Then the nail clippers just rubbed on his paw. Next clippers over the nail & wiggle. Then eventually clipping. At first just one toe, now all with no probs. The whole process took many months but only because I'm slack. If you did it every day it wouldn't take too long. It's worth it in the long run not to have the dramas.
