I have some friends who went on it and lost a lot of weight, but when they started eating carbs again they bloated because their system couldn't handle the sugars.

You can't have anything with sugar in it either, including fruit and some veggies like carrots :( one drawback they noticed was a lack of energy because your body converts carbs into sugar which gives you an energy boost.

You can have meat, eggs, cheese basically all the protein you want.

Personally I have found that the best diet out there is the Body for Life "diet". It stresses eating balanced portions of protein, carbs and veggies. Also, you eat smaller meals more frequently. Basically a serving is the size of your closed fist. Basically here's what it is: breakfast orotein/carbs, snack protein/carbs, lunch protein/carbs/veggies, snack protein/carbs, dinner protein/carbs/veggies. You get hungry about every 3 hours which is when you should be eating to keep your body's "fuel" level up.

I am going to speak STRICTLY for myself and my own experiences here....

I went on the Atkins diet a few years ago. I was 210 lbs on a 5'7 frame. Long story short......I lost 60 pounds and today I am a happy, healthy, 150lbs.

Here's a quick run down of my success story...

1. REalized I was fat
2. Realized I was unhealthy (most importantly)
3. Used the Atkins diet as a KICK start to self improvement
4. As my weight dropped, my exercise stamina increased and I became more active, therefore, losing more weight
5. As my weight dropped I SLOWLY incorporated certain types of "good" carbs BACK into my diet. Such as fruits, veggies, rye breads, etc.
6. I had my bloodwork monitored and my good cholestrol (HDL?) is OVER half of my cholestrol. That is very good! Doctor actually asked me if I was a runner or athlete do to my good triglicerides, blood, etc. yeah right! ha!

I believe the Atkins or any no carb diet is an excellent first step onto the road of self improvement and health. It is geared to be a "tool" in kick starting weight loss and to TEACH you how your body reacts to certain types of foods.

I used to eat pasta, white breads, flower products, sugar products, potatoe products and the like ALLT HE TIME. They were cheap and I was usually broke. Today, I eat pretty much like anyone else except I still stay away from pasta and potatoe products. They make me bloat and always have. They also came right back "out" once eaten (you catch my drift) and I always slept bad at night after eating them. I'll have some occassionaly for the holidays or if eating out, but they just don't taste good to me anymore.

Oh, one more thing..my sister-in-law got motivated after talking with me. She is, I'm guessin, in the mid to upper 300 range. To date since starting the ATKINS diet 5 months ago, she has lost 60 lbs!!!! She is learning an incredible amount about her body, foods she can and can not eat, and actually did the Turkey Trot this year! Woot woot. I'm VERY excited for her and once she loses her first 100lbs, we're going shopping! Her doctor was also a bit leary of the diet, but after losing the 60lbs and having her cholestorol drop and her triglicerides drop 92 points (WOOT WOOT), she is revamping her thoughts on this diet.

One more point, I am constantly reading reports such as , "Dr. ATkins, did he have it right all along", etc. There are new studies released everyday that are revisiting his concept (around since the 70's mind you) and finding that he HAS been right all along. Doctors that said he was crazy, are now using the plan to assist their own patients. Even my own doctor encouraged me to try it.

Well, enough jabbering. I realize there is an equal amount of people that DON'T believe in this plan. HOWEVER, for someone who's been there, done that, and has the proof that it works and has kept the weight off for close to 4 years now, consider me a big supporter of this program.

My DH and I are both on the Atkins diet and both have had some success. I seem to have reached a plateau and have lost no weight since the first month, but I have modified my diet somewhat since I'm close enough to my "ideal" weight that I don't stress too much. You really have to listen to your body and decide what is right for you. My exercise is minimal, I have to have knee replacement surgery and can't do much (other than housework, of course!).

I have researched the diet, thought not as much as I researched BARF before switching my babies to that! The more I read about the BARF diet, the more similarities I noticed between that diet and Atkins.

IMHO, all in moderation. Do what works for you.

I just recently saw something on a news clip that said studies are showing that this diet actually works better than the one recommended by the American heart association. They studied 2 groups of people and the ones on the Atkins lost more weight and had better cholesterol counts. They said that more research needed to be done. I had tried to cut my carbs and substitute a drink called MetRX over 1 year ago. I had lost 20 lbs and kept the weight off for 1 yr. The drink is expensive though, and as soon as I stopped the drink I was hungry all the time and craved lots of food. I have gained back weight. I wish there was something I could stick to that was healthy but satisfying. I am a semi-veggie and do not eat red meat so I thought the Atkins diet would be difficult for me to attempt.

A couple of years ago i started the Akins diet and i lost the initial 20 pounds, after talking w/ my doctor and nutrientalist (however you spell that) i was told and i believe, that the no carb diet is VERY bad for you and detrimental in the long run, so we did a "jump" start with the atkins but i then went on weight watchers and had a lot of success.
i also got diagnosised with inflammatory bowel disease while i was on the atkins diet, all the meat and etc was killing my stomach and when i went to my dr and told him the symptoms and what was going on her said i had IBD, i never would have known otherwise, so for me i have to be careful what i decide anyways.
i think atkins is a good jump start but i do believe that long term it is detrimental, everything jeanne said is what i was told and believe

I have to agree with everyone, you need a jump start, I go to WW and I got the jump start there. You get a start and then you feel better and start taking better care of yourself. But even WW, you can't go counting points forever! and writting in a journal what you eat all the time or drinking shakes and eating meal replacement bars. You need to learn to eat right. Good foods, exercise all in moderation. Its hard in this world of Junk food and drive thrus. A lot of people are making a lot of money with weight loss programs and foods. As said above, get started and then try and eat right. I feel for everyone out there who needs to loose weight but if your going to do something do it right and with a Dr.s guidance. So many people start these diets and end up very sick.

I actually found one way that worked for me - just didn't get to finish it!! Metabolife! Yeah - in the beginning it made me really jumpy so I just took one a day and then worked myself to the maximum dose! I lost about 5lbs in a week! That was just too fast for me, so I started to cut back on the amount taken again! After three weeks, I didn't take any of it for a week. Then on again for three weeks! I didn't want to become addicted to it! Although - the off week was hell cuz I lost all that energy! While I was on Metabolife - Apollo was in HEAVEN. I would walk about 2 miles (sometimes jog) every night. I was great. I was eating less, losing weight, feeling great, and excercising! I did plateau a couple times where I didn't lose anything for quite a while, but I just kept doing what I was doing. You body plateaus to see if you're going to change again!

When I found out I was pregnant - obviously I stopped immediatly! I felt the effects since I had no energy, but I didn't gain the weight back like I thought I would! Heck - I've been off them for about 3 months now and have only gained about 10lbs!! Hopefully that's all baby!

Everyone here is right! We all know that the MAGIC stuff won't work forever and there is no such thing! The only way to do it right is to make a lifestyle change!!! You need to realize that you can treat yourself to the tasty stuff - just not every night!! To anyone wanting to lose weight (I'm sure a lot of people) just don't do something drastic and good luck!!!

My husband tried metabolife and it messes his body up. He ended up thinking he was having a heart attack it ended up being heart palpatations which now he has panic attacks which they think is from the metabolife. Also my sister did the Atkins diet and she caused herself to have Liver problems (her enzymes were way out of whack) she did it for too long. The Atkins diet should really only be used for a short period of time, then I would do the Body for Life. Get the book and read it! This guy knows what he is talking about my husband did really good on it. ( I was nice and our whole family-the kids and all) started eating like that and we all did real well. The #1 thing people do wrong when they are trying to lose weight is not do enough cardio work out (ie: riding the bike-or walking on the treadmill) I learned the hard way smashicon Just my opinion.

Thanks you guys, I am learning alot. But my major problem is that I crave sweets after I eat a meal. Any suggestions on how to deal with that...or what I could eat that taste good to stop the craving?. I know I should excersice, that is my problem. I just don't have time! I am not over weight...I just want to lose a little weight, and then I might be motivated to keep it off.
