The general formula for how long a puppy can hold it is his age in months, plus one hour. So if your pup is 2 months old, thats two hours, add one hour, he can hold it for 3 hours. You will likely have to get up with him a few times a night for him to go potty. Fortunately, Tyson slept the whole night through when he was that little. I think we only had a few midnight potties. Good luck, and keep us posted :)

Response to leaving puppy alone all day

Hello,

I don't think you should ever leave Mickey
alone all day. A breeder once told me that
Boxers are companion dogs and they NEED people;
otherwise, they will whine, scratch, develop
psychological problems, or something bad.

As for the two hours... Yes .. puppy can hold
it for three hours. And that usually applies
when he/she is in the crate because that's
when they'll most likely be holding it in.
But if he's roaming around, then keep a close
eye on him because he'll probably eliminate
when he feels like it. You can tell if Mickey
all of the sudden starts ignoring you while
you are playing with him and he starts going
somewhere else. If that's the case, expect
an elimination.

My husband and I both work all day, but our son will be with Mickey during the day for awhile, until he moves out (if he EVER moves out!), but there will be a time when we have no choice but to leave him. I don't want to be abusive, what do boxer people do when they both work?

I am very lucky to be able to stay home with my Boxers and other pets, skin kids too! But when I did work the Boxers were crated up to 8 hours. They did very well...but now that they are 2 they are trusted to be left alone in the house and not get into anything. I have left them for up to 5 hours alone and they have been great!

Good Luck with your new baby! How exciting!

Murph- flashy brindle boy nat. ears/docked tail
Hugo- fawn boy nat ears/docked tail
Maddie- Jack Russel
Ozzie- Meyer's Parrot

This time, let me be the one to respectfully disagree. :) Although its not IDEAL to leave a puppy alone all day, some of us simply do not have the luxury of staying home instead of working. We got Legend at 8 weeks old, and from the 4th day we had him until now, he's alone from 9am-4pm Mon-Fri. We provide him with an exercise pen, crate, toys, and a radio on to keep him company.

I'm proud to say that he's grown into a very well-adjusted, happy, EXTREMELY affectionate young boy. :D

Like Deb, my boys have been alone for long periods of time and adjusted very very well. I too left the radio on and as a matter of fact I still do for the dogs and bird. No behavioral problems here! :)

Congratulations on your new family addition!

My advice on potty training:

Follow the age in months plus one hour to determine how long the puppy can hold it in the crate. While out of the crate for any reason, take him outside to his potty spot ten times more often than you think you need to. Limit water intake to as much as they want at mealtimes only and no liquids after 7 or 8pm.

At two months, when my pups were up and playing, they could not be trusted beyond twenty minutes.

Have fun, and enjoy every minute!

Thanks! You guys have helped set my mind at ease. I wasn't always the best mom with my skin kids, I want to be the best mom possible for Mickey! By the way, my skin kids turned out okay :D

As I said, my 18 year-old son will be playing with Mickey during the day, so he shouldn't be in the crate all that much. I think (over the objections of my husband) that Mickey will be sleeping with me at night. Any suggestions on how best to make that work?

Well, with Murph I just laid on my side with him like under my arm until he relaxed and fell asleep then he was fine. Hugo was a rescue and older, both sleep in the bed...thank goodness for king size beds! Of course both need to be next to me so I wake up in some uncomfy positions, but they are SO worth it!

Just relax, all will go well and you have plenty of help from others here if you get in a bind! Boxers give so much!! Enjoy!

Hi! Congratulations on your new baby! We just got one a few weeks ago and we are actually going to get anohter tomorrow! Boxer puppies are so beautiful with those little tail nubs wiggling around! :D

We let Abby sleep in the bed with us since she was 6 weeks old (she is now 11 weeks old) . She USUALLY needs to get up and pees about 2:30 am. We go to bed around 11. Then she gets up with her Daddy at 5:30 and goes again... eats, etc. We put her in the bed with us so that when she does wake up in the middle of the night and pee... we know she needs to go b/c we can feel her wriggling. We have gotten very lucky with Abby though... she has been very easy to housetrain.

As far as the crates go... we HAVE to leave Abby in the crate for 8 hours Mon-Fri. We both have to work to supply her with the endless amounts of toys that she has come to expect! She does well with this... although she DOES pee-pee in there but that's b/c she cannot hold it for 8 hours, so we do not scold her for that. I just wash her towels everyday! :D

I hope everything works out for you and your new pup!
