i saw 2 cars in the driveway this morning, so i marched over to the neighbors and knocked on the door. and knocked. and knocked.
finally, the young woman answered. i apologized for being so rude, i said i should have introduced myself days ago since i was always showing up at her doorstep. i told her i often saw her dog outside when i was out with buster, and worried about him in the cold. i told her since boxers and pits have similar coats, i know how easily they can get way too cold, and that i worry about her puppy out for any length of time. i told her about how we have adopted all our dogs from rescue, and in being involved in rescue, we've heard about dogs getting frostbite and even dying from exposure, and how quickly that can happen.
i gave her a leash and collar, a kong, and some toys, and told her how to fill the kong and even freeze it for the puppy to chew on.
i also told her that buster and i are outside very often, and we'd keep an eye on the puppy for her if she ever needed us to. ( i was hoping she got the message that i would be watching how she treats him, and that i'm aware of when and for how long he is out).
i told her that i know how frustrating a puppy can be, they are so cute initally but are so much work, and that i could imagine how stressful it must be to have a puppy and 2 small children, so if she ever needs any help or advice, my door is always open.
i told her not to worry if she ever sees police cars in our driveway, as my bil is a cop, and we know so many of our town's police force, they often stop over to chat or visit. i wanted her to keep that info on file in her mind should anything ever turn sour.
so, i hope i let her know in a nice way that i am aware of what happens to the dog, and that i will be looking out for him from now on. also wanted her to know that i have resources to rely on (bil) to handle whatever may happen.
hopefully i got my point across, and kept the lines of communication open in the process. i plan on making myself very visible so she knows i'm serious.

That’s great! What was her response? Did she seem open to your ideas & suggestions?

You are an angel!! That baby is so lucky to have you caring about him and watching over him - I hope the family will accept your kindness and generosity and will learn something from you. You are handling this situation beautifully!! BIG kudos to you!! :)

I'm definitely interested in an update on this! I live in Indiana too and know that it is way too cold for that baby to be outside!

good job

I think you did a good job by taking the oportunity to educate the owner about proper puppy care. Just because someone got a puppy they honestly may have no idea how to properly care for it. The best thing I ever had my son do when potty training our pup so that he would realize how cold it can be is when he had to be outside with the dog while it did it's business. He understood if he was cold the dog was also cold.

Well, I live in Chicago, not too far from you. If this behavior keeps up, call me. I would knock on the door, wait for her to open, punch her in the mouth and put HER a$$ in the freezing cold all night.

Stories like this make me sick. Sorry.
