Last year this time, my vet diagnosed my boxer, Doc , with cardiomyopothy. We did not expect him to live a month. He was almost 10 1/2 at the time. We one year later he is still here and up until last night was doing well... He has been having fainting spells and losing his bowels and urine since I got home last night around 6... I honestly did not expect him to be with us this morning, but he is...He has had about 4 episodes since he got up at 7 am. I know the end is near, but I don't know how to tell if he is in pain... I don't want to have him put down, I want this to happen as naturally as possible...I have cried my eyes out....I am exhausted as I am sure he is too... We have hugged, kissed, and told each other our goodbyes, but I just want some prayers that he will go peacefully and not in pain...Anyone go thru this, what can I expect? Am I being cruel by not putting him to sleep? He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but then I am not sure...Please....looking for comfort and guidance...for the best friend I have ever had or will have in my life...My Doc....:(

I'm so sorry

I'm so sorry for what Doc's been going through and you as well, always by his side. I think you know Doc better than anyone else ever could and you should trust your own instincts. He knows you love him and he trusts you because you've earned it. My thoughts are with you and Doc during this difficult time. Please stay strong.

Panting can be an indication of pain.

Did Doc's veterinarian ever discuss the possibility of any medication for the cardiomyopathy?

Meds

Yes, she did, but we chose not to do medication, or go to the cardiologist due to his age...she felt at the stage he was at that there was no guarentee they would help, but she left the decision up to us...We chose not to go with meds...his cardiomyopothy she explained to us, was part of his getting older and his heart starting to wear out...And without meds he has lived another year without any episodes or in any pain, up until last night...There is no way he would survive a trip to the vets at this point and he would not survive any type of surgery for his heart...He also has some other age related problems, but as we all know they act like puppies right up until the end...So at almost 11 1/2 yrs of age, I think he will be leaving us soon...

you know when the time is right

I am so sorry for what you and Doc are going through. We went through the same thing with my parents' mixed hound. Howler was 17 when we helped him to the bridge. He would have his good and bad days for the last 2 years of his life, but he was still having good days. We knew when the time was right-For a couple of days he lost control of his bodily functions and wouldn't eat. Then we woke up the third day and he couldn't stand up. We knew our gentle soul had served his purpose here on earth and it was time to send him home. It's never an easy decision and I will pray for you and Doc.

I am so sorry. As long as your baby doesn't appear to be pain and you can be there I wouldn't rush to the vets. He will let you know when the time comes(If it does) for you to help him to the bridge. More likely he will just go to sleep with you by his side knowing he is loved. Again I am so sorry

Thank you so much...

He has had several more episodes today, but he still wants to eat, and even barked at us when we were eating for some food...:) but he is exhausted and after an episode for not being able to breathe, urinating, and passing his bowels, he does pant for a bit, but I just figure he is trying to get the air he couldn't when he passed out... He follows me everywhere and sometimes looks up at me, like he is waiting for me to do something...what I don't know...And all of a sudden I am up his butt, instead of him up mine,lol...and I am sure he is wondering why the role reversal...Well thank you all so much for your advice , prayers , and taking the time out of your busy day to post to me regarding Doc...I am going to go lay down for a bit, because I am exhausted also..Think I will make a bed up on the floor next to Doc and take a nap with him....
Thanks again for everything,
Theresa

I am so sorry for what you and doc are going through. my first boxer sasha was a young 2 1/2 years old when I had to help her to the bridge. it was one of the hardest things I have ever done. but I was with her all the way I held her in my lap and I told her to go and be free to run and play with the butterflies and one day I would be there to get her. she was is pain and I think she was trying to stay with me longer to help me to not be in pain. I knew what I had to do for my sasha. only you know what is best for doc. and when the time comes you will know.

I am so sorry for what you and Doc are going through. I can't imagine how difficult it must be right now. I have no words of wisdom but do have huge boxer (((((HUGS))))) and sloppy smooches for both you and Doc. You are in our thoughts.
