Been thinking about Baxter today.
How's he feeling?
Jill, thank you for thinking of us
I'm very happy to be able to report that Baxter continues to do pretty good. He is on 20mg of pred a day still (10 in the am and 10 in the pm) but we aren't seeing the marked improvements that we first saw when Bax was originally placed on the pred. His back legs are not as weak now though and they seem to be much more coordinated then when we were weaning him down. Baxter still has confusion and has a hard time getting around the house but we manage pretty good. We had our appointment on Monday with Dr. Verna and she has added two chinese herbs to Bax's list of supplements. They are San Leng and E Zhu. If anyone is familiar with these, I would love to hear from you. Baxter had a chiropractic adjustment which he loved (got me thinking that I need to try that for myself!). He felt so good that he went for two walks on Monday, if you can believe that! Dr. Verna did not recommend acupuncture for Bax, she didn't feel he needed it. Dr. Verna also said that she is amazed at how healthy Baxter appears on the outside. Baxter continues to loose weight but not drastically. He lost about a half pound in the past week. She said his wasting was noticeable but not excessive. Dr. Verna is going to consult with Dr. Kruesi regarding the herbs and his plans for Baxter so that they can work together for him. I feel very confident in our "team" of Doctors and I have no doubt that they are pulling for him just as much as we are. It's very comforting.
We had our follow up with Dr. Kruesi this morning. We will do another biomedical profile the beginning of December (god willing) and see how he is doing at that point. We were told we could stop giving several of the supplements when they run out, which for most is in the coming week. I am very nervous about this because Bax has done so well on them but I know that Dr. Kruesi knows what he is doing.
As promised, Baxter is less manic and less on edge, happier and calmer. He no longer pants excessively from the prednisone and he sleeps like a rock again--and straight through the night!!! Although we can tell that Baxter has declined in certain areas over the last 6 weeks, he has also made improvements. Baxter still appears very happy, still takes his daily walk and his appetite remains strong.
Right now we are holding steady and continuing to research anything that will help to improve Baxter's quality of life and borrow yet more quality time. I know in my heart that each of your silent prayers and positive vibes have not only helped me and my husband to deal with this, they have also helped Baxter. Please allow me to again thank each of you who have shown us so much love and support over the past six weeks. You are all wonderful
Aimee
