Poor Baxter has been having a terrible time, we could really use some help. Mid May we took Baxter to the emergency vet for what was diagnosed as a stroke (partial facial paralysis, head tilt, eating sideways, staggering to the right, etc). Although Baxter did begin to improve on the medication, it was only short lived. The emergency vet discussed three possibilities with us. Stroke, brain tumor or ear infection. The vet believed it to be a stroke but stated that if he did not continue to improve on meds, we would need to watch for seizures and other signs indicative of a brain tumor. Apparently, brain tumors are common in boxers (atleast we keep being told this). It is probably good to mention that the emergency vet is one of Baxter's primary vets so she is very familiar with him. Since the emergency vet visit, we have kept in contact with our vets office and have seen them one other time in regards to Baxter's symptoms. Both vets have different theories. One strongly feels that he is experiencing residual effects of the stroke but the other is highly suspicious it's a brain tumor. The only way to tell for certain would be to do an MRI for which they do not feel he is a candidate because he would need to be put under anesthia. Baxter is not himself, I need to know what is wrong with him so that I can figure out how to help him but I feel like I've come up to a brick wall. Baxter no longer knows his way around the house, he is always bumping into things that have been where they are for years (for those who are not familiar with Baxter he is blind). We used to be able to let Baxter out and he would go down the deck stairs, do his business and come back up. When we let him out to do his business we have to escort him now because he immediately goes to the right when he exists the door and gets tangled in the deck furniture when the stairs are to the left and always have been. He doesn't sleep as well as he used to, waking up several times a night. Baxter seems to get confused very easily, when I call him he sometimes goes in the opposite direction of my voice. He tends to circle and always to the right. He got to circling in the yard one time so fast that I had to go and stop him and then he began to stagger and he fell over in the yard. A few nights ago when we were on our walk we stopped to talk with the neighbors and he circled to the right around my husbands legs while we stood still. Also, when he lifts his leg to pee he will sometimes sway very noticeably. He has wet the bed in his sleep, but only on two occasions.

We have a vet appointment for Baxter again tomorrow, I'm requesting a referral to a neurologist. Any information, advice or experiences you could share would be helpful. I'm very sad for Baxter and want only the best for him.

I have no words of wisdom to offer you during this frustrating time.
IF only they could talk.
Baxter will get a special gator foot spinning from all us here.
Hang in there, there must be answers.

Aimee--I'm so sad to hear about what you are going through with Baxter. I hope you are able to get to the bottom of this soon. Here is a link to a thread on a somewhat similar topic from late July:

I'm pasting this in b/c in the thread I make mention of a veterinary neurologist I heard speak on the topic of brain tumors in dogs. The outcome is NOT always bad, so I wanted to send the info your way, in the event that is what's going on with your boy.

I hope he is OK. Tae sends him kisses.

Re:Need Help

I had an epileptic boxer that had a bout of uncontrollable cluster seizures, and the subsequent brain swelling caused symptoms similar to that of a brain tumor (ie circling, walking into walls, head shaking, tilted head, etc). In fact, the specialists at the critical care hospital thought she did, but like your dog, they too thought she was too sick for the anesthesia/MRI. The neurologist put her on a sedative, prednisone (to reduce the swelling), and a high dosage of potassium bromide. Within several days, although very weak, she was her ol' self and responded to all of her commands (hence, no lasting brain damage!!!). Eventually her anti seizure dosage was reduced, and they continued to be well managed for several more years. The poor thing later developed pancreatitis and pemphigus, but that too was managed with the proper meds and diet. I strongly advise you to get a consult from a well qualified neurologist. I'll keep you both in my prayers during this difficult time - Cathy

Cody, 11 years old, just started falling, slipping and stagering to the right as well but he isn't walking in circles. He bumps into doors, tables and anything else on the right side of him. It is almost as if he doesn't see them. I also thought a stroke but I was hoping for an ear infection.

We took him to the vet and she said that most likely he either has a tumor on his spinal cord or a disc problem. They took xrays but couldn't determine what the problem is. She put him on medicine which is causing him to have accidents which is so out of character. The medicine is not helping at all. Luckily, the vet said he is not in pain.

They also want to do a MRI like your vet but they said that is atleast $1000.00 and no guarantee that they will be able to tell what the problem is. Then they may need to do a mulligram (sp) or somthing like that another thousand. Since he is getting old, she didn't really recommend surgery.

Let me know if you find anything out since they are having similar symptoms. I will also let you know if we decide to pursue anything. We are sending you hugs and saying prayers for you and Baxter. I know how hard and sad it is to see them like this. I also want the best for Cody, I love him so much. I am trying to think positive with Cody and you do the same for Baxter.
