We had our consultation yesterday with Dr. Kruesi. It was postponed from Monday because we had to run more labs. The consultation went well and I am very excited about starting our regime. I had to take in quite a bit of information during the consult, but I'll try to summarize what our plan is. I was so excited that I had to share!

First and foremost is to wean Bax off the prednisone and the proin. We started eliminating his nighttime dose last night, once that is eliminated we will then begin to eliminate his morning dose gradually as well. Baxter's labwork has taken a wrong turn since August 31 (the last date of labs) which is apparently normal with pred use. I'm worried about taking him off the pred but I have to be willing to take this leap of faith, it's all we have left. Dr. Kruesi has given us a list of 18 either supplements, glandulars or herbs. I should be receiving these by fedex today. We start by adding one new supplement to the first meal, two to the second and so on until Bax is getting the full program, everday. It will take us about 3 weeks to get him on the full program and weaned off of his medications. In 3 weeks we were told that Baxter will be happier and calmer, less manic and less on edge. We do a follow-up in 3 weeks to see how he is responding to his treatments. One of Baxter's largest problems right now is his wasting, it's affecting his heart. He has a malabsorption problem and also some kind of bad bacteria in his intestines (the kind that causes gas). We have started adding psyllium seed husk powder to each of his meals, this is supposed to help. There is also some other supplements in the package we are getting to address this as well. His diet hasn't changed much since he is already raw fed. We have changed his veggies with breakfast to all low glycemic veggies. We have to be very careful of his sugar intake. The biggest change was the types of snacks he could have. No more dog biscuits. Mr. B's snacks will consist of turkey dogs, rye crisps with peanut butter, cream cheese, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, walnuts, pecans, almond butter, and any kinds of berries high in antioxidants such as blueberries or cherries. You know he is really enjoying these :) We are very confidant that Baxter can have some real quality time ahead if we can wean him off of the meds, get him onto his treatment plan and get his heart, liver and intestines under control. Please send us the best boxer vibes you can muster and pray that the next three weeks bring improvement for Mr. B! I'll be sure to update you often on his progress. Again, thank you all for going through this with us. Your support really helps get us through this!

All fingers, toes, and paws are crossed here that this new regimine helps Baxter!! Did you drive all the way up to Vermont, or did you do this consult by phone?? Just curious as to how that works. I suppose if it was the latter, you sent his records up to the dr. up there??

Once again, thank you all very much for your positive vibes and prayers!

Lenore, luckily we did not have to drive to Vermont. We did a phone consultation with Dr. Kruesi which took about an hour and a half. All of Baxter's records and labwork were sent to Dr. Kruesi's offie in advance of the appointment. Dr. Kruesi received everything, including his MRI, his emergency vet records from last May, and all bloodwork, urinalysis, labs of any kind and records from the last 4 years. Dr. Kruesi created the blood medical profile and faxed that to me to review prior to the appointment. This was about a 15 page report. After reviewing it, I could make a list of questions to ask during the consult to make better use of the time. I can also fax any questions to him as I have them and he will fax me an answer back. Fax consults are cheaper than phone consultations however, I would definantly recommend a phone consult for the initial visit. After our 3 week follow-up, we do another profile in 2 and a half months. I can't explain my emotions when I heard that Baxter has a very high potential of being here in 2 and a half months. This has been the best news I have heard in a VERY long time :)
