Update!
It has been 10 months today since Baxter began experiencing difficulty. Wow, I can't believe how blessed we have been! This has been a long and tough battle but my man is such a trooper each and every step of the way.
Baxter is currently stable. I had him into the vets again last week, his body is having a tough time fighting off a lot of opportunistic infections. I came home Wednesday night and the whole side of Mr. B's face had swelled up and when I lifted his lip his abcess/ulcer just poured blood. I called the vet and started him on another round of antibiotics immediately. It's looking much better though it still will not heal. He had a few blisters on his skin near his staph infection but those have cleared now as well. Also, what I thought was an ulcer on his eye turned out to be a small sore that is nonharmful or painful, thankfully. We are managing these ailments pretty well and I continually work on boosting his immune system. His mobility has declined again in the past week though he is still able to get around. It's so hard to watch him go through each phase of the decline. My vet and I talked at great length about his condition and currently we feel he still has a lot of quality. When I brought him into the vet Bax immediately went to the treat drawer and began pawing at it like he always does. We laughed and my vet said that as long as he is still doing that then we are still doing pretty good.
We decreased his pred by 2.5mg on March 2 and are scheduled to decrease it again by 2.5mg on March 16. Every two weeks we are going to try and wean him by 2.5mg until we find that he isn't doing well. My vet thinks his mobility decline in the past week is tumor related and not pred related. 2.5mg should not effect him in such a way but we are going to closely monitor it and I will not hesitate to bump him back up if he needs it. At this stage of the game, whatever works.
Thank you all for your wonderful support and encouragement. There are days that I don't know what I would do without it. Please send us some of those great Boxerworld vibes, they are magical!
