NEED HELP: Coco's unexplained phenomena

This is probably going to appear like the strangest post but my wife and I are at our wit's end and need the board's input.

Our 2 1/2 yr old daughter Coco has been super strange since the Weekend. It started Saturday night when she was on our bed and started to shake tremendously. We had had scattered T-storms so I didn't really worry to much.

Then last evening, the same thing more or less happened. My wife was on the couch and Coco jumped up with her and was visibly scared. She was shaking as before and kept looking up at the celing and light fixture (or perhaps moving her nose up to smell?). I am really not sure, but there were no storms last night. It appears to me that she is either seeing or smelling something that is making her frieghtened. I got her on a leash and walked her throughout the house and it seemed like there was not any place she didn't want to go, just a general level of discomfort.

Last night she wouldn't go on top of our bed. Keep in mind that almost every night of her life is spent below all the sheets at the end of the bed, with her head resting on somebody's leg and taking up at least 1/2 the King size bed. Mostly she slept on the floor next to my wife, and when we took her out to go potty, she ended up going to sleep in her crate. The only time she spends in her crate normally is when we have some dinner guests and i don't want her to slobber over everyone.

So does anyone know the deal with my dog? Right now she is in her crate and doesn't really look excited about coming out. Should I call a Vet, Psychologist, or Exorcist?

TIA

Coco's concerned Dad.

Wow! Its hard to say what is wrong with her, unless you can find somebody who can read her mind!

If one of my boys did that, I think I might be checking for gas leaks or something. Something wrong with the house? People can't smell it, but I heard dogs act strangly and they can smell it.

It might be a long shot, but doesn't hurt to check.

I don't know what her problem could be. Apparantly, she is sensing something that us humans can't. It's very interesting. Let us know what happens.

This probably sounds silly, but my first two thoughts when I read your posts were that your dog may have seizures, or that you have a ghost in your house. I'm going to go read up on canine seizures. It seems like I had read/heard somewhere that when dogs first have seizures they act like that, but I'm not sure....... I could be very confused.

Ok, I went and checked and I wasn't confused. What I was thinking of was complex focal seizures. With those, the dog remains conscious, but can have hallucinations and bizarre behavior. Also, with any seizure activity, regardless of the type of seizure, when the dog feels it coming on, they can get confused and scared and start acting weird. Hopefully this isn't the situation with Coco, but it might be worth checking into if she keeps it up. Good luck!

Thanks for all your replies. I worked from home this morning and she was normal. But we get back this evening and she is acting really weird again. I don't think its seizures because around us she is fine, she still has a good appetite and likes to play (but you could be right).

Right now we are playing with one of her toys. We throw the toy for her to fetch it and bring it back. When she goes to retrieve it, she picks it up with her mouth, looks around suspicously and then returns to us.

I am going to call the Vet tommorow, I just hope they don't think I am nuts!

On the one hand, this doesn't sound like a focal seizure to me. My dog has had them and they tend to look pretty particular. BUT, if she was having seizures, it wouldn't necessarily effect her appatite or other signs of good health. There are also other health problems that can cause strange behavior, problems with the thyroid I believe is a common one.
As for the original topic, have there been storms on the way while this is happening? One of my dogs is really scared of thunder and will start to hide many hours before there is any sign of bad weather. Dogs are much more sensitive to changed in atmospheric pressure.
Has she ever shown signs of fear like this before? You said she kept looking up, was the fan on, could that have been scaring her? You have to look around not as a person, who is used to the things around yoou, but as a dog, who doesn't necessarily understand the lamp, of heater, or new rug......
