Thanks everyone for your prayers
I just got off the phone with the surgeon a couple of minutes ago. Lt. did fine with the surgery. It was a 2 hour ordeal. They did not find an actual stone in the urethra but it was very sandy and gritty. The Dr. removed all of the gravel/sand and did what is known as a scrotal urethrostomy. Basically in laymans terms they create a new pee hole.
Then they removed 2 stones from his bladder. One of the stones was quite large which was causing his bladder to swell? These stones will be sent to minnesota to be checked by a lab that will determine 'what' type of stones they are which will hopefully help us figure out what caused them and what we can do in the future to avoid this sort of catastorphe.
The bloodwork is being done to determine if any damage was done to the liver since he was backed up for so long. Which is what gets me ranting on my next point. His original vet misdiagnosed the dang thing!!!
I've gone to this vet since Lt. was a pup. All in all she's been a good vet and usually due to these forums I usually know what the issue is and what to do about it before he even gets in there. I.E. during his neutering I didn't want ACE used and she didn't she followed my wishes. When we went in for ear infections she didn't give him steroids and instead listened to my desire to check for mites/yeast and to handle it naturally without steroids (Benadryl). Anyways she's been a good vet. But she missed the boat on this one and she told me his bladder wasn't full. She told me she ran a catheter. But when I got to KC the vet there told me there is NO way a catheter was run on Friday. Lt. would have died if we didn't get him to KC when we did. His bladder would have burst.
My vet/Lt's vet of 7 yrs did not call KC and talk to the vet there or anything. She just sent me with the x-rays and some papers. And maybe it's not her responsibility since my dog's never been REALLY sick but it would be nice to have a vet who would do that. I feel like she kicked me out the door and told me "call me monday and tell me what happens"....WTF!!!! Upon further investigation I found out that Lt's vet doesn't do any 'major' surgeries herself and outsources all of them. That's fine but if you misdiagnose something like this I question whether or not it's because you don't have enough experience in seeing these sort of problems.
Needless to say I asked the vet who did the surgery today if he'd be LT's full time vet and he agreed. So that's good news. He has great reviews from numerous people I know. Including my girlfriend which is how I ended up in his office. And again thanks for your prayers. I get Lt. tommorow from the vets and he'll be home with me.
