Well, it has taken me a week to get on here to write this. This is probably the hardest thing I have had to do in my 34 years.
As some of you know Kona had been dealing with some health issues the past few months. She had surgery a few weeks ago to remove an obstruction.....it was removed but with that came more problems. After her surgery she started vomitting, pieces of the obstruction and a brown liquid which turned out to be blood from a bleeding ulcer. She went in for an Endoscopy thats how we found out about the ulcers, and they pumped 3 liters of fluid from her stomach. Now she had motility issues from her stomach being so stretched from the fluid, she was having acid reflux issues before all of this surgery so her stomach must have been stretching for a good 2-3 months before. We thought everything was good after the diagnosis of Peptic Ulcers and we knew how to treat. One week went by and she had been keeping all of her food down, I took her into the vet on Saturday she had lost another 2 pounds in a week, she hadn't been eating as much because we didn't want to push her to far to soon, but she should have at the very least been maintaing her weight. Kona had went from 37 lbs at 10 months to 29 lbs three weeks later. So my vet told me to increase her food, we went home and I gave her a cup more plus a small can of wet....within 2-3 hours she started to swell again, I knew something was wrong. The rest of the day she started regurgitating liquid and could hardly walk. She kept wanting to go outside to the same spot and just stand there with her head down. Back to the vet Sunday morning for an Xray, her stomach wasn't as filled as we thought so he gave her a BIPP(it is like a barium in a pill form to track movement). He took an Xray and marked to the barium, we came back 5 hours later to see where it was now.......it hadn't moved, it was in the very same spot, she had No motility whatsoever! Here comes the hard part, he said that we could do another surgery(like a gastric-bypass) to shrink her stomach and hope she would regain motility but there was no guarantee. I finally broke down and said NO MORE, you have butchered her enough her little body can't take anymore, she had been under anesthesia 3 times in 7 days, I am suprised she made it through all that. I took Kona home and we sat there, I was holding her looking for a sign I didn't want to play god....I couldn't do it. I asked her.....Baby, what do I do? She raised her paw at me and just looked at me with the sadest eyes I had ever seen......we both knew it was time. I loaded her up in the car, my husband drove as I held her in my arms......she didn't move one bit the whole ride there. I knew I had to be there with her when she made her journey, I held her as they gave her a sedative, she just closed her eyes and the whole time I told her how much I loved her and what a good girl she was. I thanked her for the best 7 months of my life, and I know she picked me to take care of her for her short time here on earth. They gave her the second shot and she was gone within 30 seconds, I have never cried so hard in my life, it was the hardest thing I have ever done. I am so thankful I was there with her, I wouldn't have had it any other way....she was my sweet baby and I miss her every second of the day. Kona fought a really hard battle and lost, I think she hung on as long as she did for me. God must had needed her for somethign pretty special to take her so soon. Kona trusted me to take care of her, she had her dignity and I knew it was unfair to keep putting her through all these surgeries. I am honored that I was the one she chose to take care of her, she knew I would love her and she trusted me, letting her go was so painful but I knew thats what she wanted me to do. I miss her every second of everyday, but I know she is pain free and watching over me telling me to not be sad for she is okay now and that she will be waiting for me. I love you baby Kona and we will be together again.
