I can't believe how incredible I feel right now, and lucky that I own boxers.
Maggie, Susie and I were taking our last walk before bedtime. It was our best walk ever with very little pulling and everybody doing their business on cue. It was really a lovely walk. I decided we'd walk around another block or two because they'd been so good and I could continue praising them and rewarding them on the good stuff.
Well we got about a block from home when about 7 or 8 young boys, loud and rather scary came up from behind me. Down the block at the other end, another 7 or 8 were coming around the corner. I thought for a minute that I was going to get caught in the middle of a gang fight or something. I can tell you, I was beginning to feel fear.
The dogs must have sensed my fear because they came very close to me and became very attentive, one looking behind (Maggie) and the other ahead (Susie). We kept walking toward home, approaching one group of boys. As we approached, Susie reared up on her hind legs and tried to lunge at the boys. I held her back and we kept walking. The boys moved around me and met up with the other guys behind me.
As we were walking, the entire group was following me, talking about how they'd like to have dogs like that. One said, "you think we can take 'em?" and I can tell you. I was really scared then. Then one of the guys started barking like a dog trying to rile either me or the dogs. Both dogs turned, reared up on their hind legs and barked and snarled like pit bulls!! It scared even me and I was nearly pulled into the group by these two snarling dogs!
The boys backed off immediately and the "barking boy" said "whoa, man. we were just kiddin' around." I said, "I hope so 'cause I'd hate to let these dogs loose on you."
They crossed the street and we walked home.
When we got upstairs I was shaking! I grabbed my dogs and hugged them so tight and thanked them. God, was I glad they were with me and their instincts were so good.
As I sit here typing this I am so moved by their bravery and loyalty in trying to protect me from harm. And to know that they did this even though both are the friendliest, wiggliest, kissiest dogs around. There was a reason these two girls came to live with me. Maybe this was it.
I have never been more proud of anyone in my life as I am of these two incredible girls tonite. Thank you Maggie and Susie. Daddy loves you so very, very much!!
