Mosquito Control?

I was wondering if/how anyone controls the mosquitos in their yard? I have looked and can not find any standing water, flower pots, ect.. that could be used as a breeding ground but I will get chewed to death anytime I am outside after 5:30pm. I don't want to give my guys frontline, as I have heard it is a pesticide and really doesn't work. Also, I don't want to apply a bug b gone liquid that you would buy from a home improvement store. I read the precautions, which said that it can be harmful to domestic animals if ingested or absorbed through the skin. Does anyone have any other ideas or suggestions?

Hi there! I use advantage for my dogs, for six years now. Getting rid of them outside we just use bug spray on ourselves. A lot of our customers use these new machines. Mosquitoes are drawn to your breath or the CO2 we put out. This is what these machines put out and attract the mosquitoes. They use propane, and you put them in your yard and they are supposed to be really good. Here is a link:

I just spray myself with Off. I use Frontline on my dogs, but that isn't supposed to be for mosquitos, I don't think--just fleas and ticks. (I could be wrong). But, if I don't use Off, they attack me, too! I hate them.

My street is divided by a storm drainage *creek*, so it doesn't have running water in it unless it rains. BUT, it has standing water in it often, and I know lots of *skeeters* are growing there.

If you find a good repellent for your dogs, let us know. I'd like to find one, too. I saw two bites of some sort on Beau this weekend. I put Benadryl gel on them, but I wish he hadn't gotten bitten. I'm afraid of West Nile virus.

We went camping alot last year and use Avon Skin So Soft on my boy's especially on there ears....and that is when the west nile just came into the news...and everybody was searching for bug repelents...I found this worked even in the deepest woods with out any harm to the boy's...and they didn't smell to bad either

Oh sorry I also heard about Palmolive mixed with water or something else on a plate outside collects the nasty critters as well !!!! Hopefully someone will be able to remember the other ingrediant !!!!

Equal parts apple cider vinegar and water put in a spray bottle works for us! Keeps away the buggies and neutralizes any odors on the coat.

Laurie and Andie took the words right outta my mouth! I usually use Avon Skin So Soft and when I am out of that I use apple cider vinegar mixed with equal parts water....both are excellent repellents and both are free of harmful chemicals!:cool: It also keeps her coat smelling nice and very shiny! As far as controlling them outside I don't think there is much to do about that except protect yourself with a good repellent. Mosquitos are here to stay and unfortunately they have become deadly in some areas. We have had 4 reported confirmed cases of West Nile Virus. Scary indeed!:eek:

I have a Mosquito Deleteo, and it works great! I hooked it up to a propane tank out in the pasture. It's protected from the horses with a fence because they seem to be curious about it. I really bought it for the horses, out of concern for West Nile Virus. But my Boxer Boru and I enjoy the benefits as well.

wonderful Ohio, I live in Cinci so I know the problem. You don't have to have any standing water to have mosquitoes. We get spray from Avon or use Offand we have a light of cintrenella candles around. You can also plant a cintrenella plant or lemon grass. I learned also you can mix up in a hose end 20 gal yard sprayer (only holds about a quart, but mixes up to 20 gal) a mixture of hot sauce and lemon dish detergent, along with some liquid ammonia. spray it on the yard and it will keep mosquitoes away along with fleas and ticks. It might keep the mosquitos away but what about your pets? I would think that dish detergent and ammonia would be toxic to animals.

Thanks for all of the suggestions! I may have to try some of repeltnet from avon and when I have the $, maybe get a propane mosquito deleto.... If I find or hear of anything else, I will keep you posted..
