I would avoid Mitaban dips at all costs. How severe is his mange? Does he just have a few spots or is it generalized?

vet says to give him the stuff half the body every other day alternating halves i guess it is pretty extensive amounts of mange this is his second case of it and hes 7 months

You might want to do a search(click on the seach button in the blue bar) about mitiban. An alternative might be ivermection. It's not quite as toxic as mitiban dips. You could also just work at boosting his immune system and feeding the best food that you can and deal with it that way. What kind of food do you feed?

How severe is the mange?? How many spots are there?? Mitaban was taken off the market quite a few years ago. I had a dog with demodex about twenty years ago. I was given mitaban and after reading the label and the vets warnings, I was afraid to use it. I tossed it in the trash. My dog had mange spots on her face, chest and front legs which I cleared with a good diet and Goodwinol Ointment which is much less toxic than mitaban. I too would go with the ivermectin (which was not around for dogs twenty years ago), if the mange is widespread. It is probably not so much as the second outbreak at seven months, but has never completely cleared. Even the stress of a growing pup can bring on outbreaks.

Purina puppy is not a good diet. There are lots of very good foods to use. I feed my guys one meal of raw and one kibble meal of Chicken Soup for Dog Lovers. I would also use a product like Probiotic to help the digestion and absorbtion of food.

Why are you needing to keep him separated from you? Because of the toxicity of the Mitaban? Demodex isn't contagious. Diesel had a small spot of it from shots and stress from a new home. We treated him with Goodwinol ointment and he eats Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul. His spot has hair growing in now.

Opinions on other foods is no problem at all. For information on what to look for in the ingredients of a food (no food can magically be any better than what is used to make it) there is some good information at www.boxerworld.com/feeding With the information there, you should be able to make a reasonable assessment of any food you look at - see what to look for, what to avoid, and why.

For information on the ingredients in 500+ dry dog foods plus ratings and reviews, see www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews For a puppy you should try to select something with protein in the range of 22-26%, so the 6-star foods are not suitable. Most of those in the 4 and 5 star premium categories are though.

I would immediately start feeding a better food. Purina doesn't make a good food. You need to go to an independant retailer. You won't find a good quality food at the grocery store or any big box retailer. Most dog food manufacturers have a store locator on their website.

Timberwold Organics, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul, and Merrick would be good places to start. There are lots of other great options as well. :)

Good luck!

we are going to try the canidae and the vet told us to use the dip every single day i dont think that is reasonable he also told us to use a 5 ml amount in a pint of water we have dropped it down to 5cc's and are only going to give him it every 10 days. he gets half his body done every other day so every 10 days is what most sites say so we will try this..
