I had a migraine last night and wish I'd have read all of these possible solutions then--ahhh. But will definatley keep in mind for the next one for sure. I too see the zig zag lines and the flashes if it's a very severe migraine. Some are worse than others, and have different things associated with them. THe ones that hit out of nowhere are the worst for me. Yesterdays came on full force in less than a half hour, the only things that work for me are sleep and cool compresses on the head. The nautiousness is the worst IMO. I take Midrin (Migrin??) for mine but I try not to take them unless I just have to, I'd rather sleep it off instead. Tylenol doesn't even seem to help a regular headache for me. I bought the Excedrin Migraine but have yet to try it but I heard it's pretty good too. I had the x-rays and all done too with nothing showing up, wish they had a reason why we get these painful things. Hope your son continues to feel better. And can't wait to hear what this Dr. says about him--he must be a great Dr. for the long wait--hope he has lots of info to give you guys!!

I used to get horrible migraines with aura, too - a.k.a "classic migraine". Aura is the visual disturbence where you see zig zags and "c's" - and in my case I would lose most of my vision.

Its true, that tylanol and ibprofen will not help a migraine. Migraines are caused by contracting blood vessells in your head, and you have to get medication for that. They work wonders. Sometimes, they dont take all the pain away, but make it bareble.

I no longer get migraines and I wanted to share with the group what helped. I stopped using artificial sweeteners - no splenda, equal, sweet n low or anything with saccrine, aspertame, etc. Diet soda was the real culprit for me. I no longer drink it, and I rarely get migraines anymore. Not good for the waist line - but very good for my head. I will chew gum with artificial sweeteners (i dont have much of a choice) but I do it carefully. It may be the reason for my occasional migraine - but I cut hair for a living - I need to have fresh breath - lol!

If you google aspartame (which is in a lot of diet soda) you find tons of information re: how bad it is for you and it is linked to migraines. I think is illeagal and considered "poison" in most countries if I remember correctly.

Migraines are horrible. I wanted my head cut off when ever I had one. :(

Hmm this could be highly likely in my case also. But being as I'm hypoglycemic I try to regulate my own diet (without meds) by basically cutting out all sugar and replacing it with splenda and equal and such. And I know I consume alot of this on a daily basis. And I must admit the migraines are much more frequent since I've been on this diet than they use to be. You might just be on to something here, thanks for the tip!!

So my son saw the specialist on Monday. We have to go back to Ottawa next Thursday for a CT Scan. In the meantime, he told me to use Fever Few for my sons' headaches. He's taken it twice now at the first sign of a headache and it seems to work. Alex was getting frustrated with his attempts to describe the headaches. You have to be very precise in describing the area of the head that hurts...how long..throbbing..pulsing..aching..dull...etc.. He finally just told the doc "look, it hurts all over my head...my eyes hurt...my HAIR hurts, I want to throw up but won't because it will feel like my head is being ripped from my shoulders. I can't talk because it hurts to move my lips. All I want to do is sleep so I don't have to feel it anymore.". He was also tested for Mono...waiting on the results for that. What a fiasco just trying to get someone to do the throat swab!! The doc gives us the requisition form to go to the lab for blood work and throat swab. Lab techs tell us they don't do throat swabs anymore (apparently because they've been vomited on in the past), and so we were given the swabs to take back to the doctors office and have him do it. We go back and are told by the receptionist that the doc doesn't do throat swabs either...he's a neurologist. So he tells me to book an appt. with our pediatrician for the swab! Geesh, it takes at least 2-3 months to get in to see the pediatrician!!! I was losing my patience and told the doc to give me the swab, I'll do it myself! Finally, he agreed to do it, but warned my son, in a humorous way, not to puke on him. My son is a kidder and lives to mess with your mind so of course during the swab he starts to gag and acts like he was going to vomit! LMAO...the doc jumped back about 2 feet...I'm literally holding my breath thinking "no Alex..please don't puke on the doc"...the sound of the receptionist sucking in her breath..my son cracks up laughing saying "you should see all your faces right now"!! Once the doc got over the initial scare, he yucked it up with my son and called him a real ham!
I'm very pleased with this doc and was happy that he suggested Fever Few instead of prescribed pain killers because this tells me that he is not one of those docs that are very quick to drug children before making a complete diagnosis. I will keep you all posted with the result. Thanks so much for the tips and support. And for other migraine sufferers out there, if you haven't already tried Fever Few, give it a whirl. It's natural and it seems to work. :)

Thanks for the tip about feverfew. Is there a recommended dosage?

Both of my kids almost puke when getting there throat swabbed! I hope they can figure something out soon. I get terrible migraines and they suck!

Xenaprincess - I've been gone due to an illness in the family. I'm so glad that you have found something that seems to be helping your son. I can't tell you how often I've thought of him. Please continue to keep us updated. There is true nothing more scary than having a child, no matter what their age, that is hurting and you can't 'fix' it.

Thanks for the updates. You and yours are in my thoughts and prayers.

Hi Sharon. I have been a migraine sufferer for 12 years. I too, would get headaches 3-4 times a week. I got so sick and tired of taking so much medication that I went a different route. I now get Botox injections every three months. An off label usage of Botox is it usually stops migraines. I had been considering it for years. Finally after a bad migraine that meds wouldn't help, I decided to try the Botox. It really seems to help. If given by a neurologist, it is usally covered by insurance as it is very expensive. I got 15 shots in my forehead and two where my head meets my neck. The shots do not hurt. It has been wonderful. Research it online...there's lots of information on it. Let me know if you have any questions.
