My boyfriend and I co-own Mac. He wants to get him tattoooed (under his leg i guess) because he thinks that not enough people know to have microchips checked. What do you think about this? I prefer the chip idea, but will do whatever it takes to not lost my puppy.

Murray was microchipped a while ago -- he had no side effects, either. I was so nervous when I brought him to the vet -- it only took a second to insert and he didn't even feel it!

I haven't got my two chipped - yet. But its on the list for their next vet visit. My three cats are all chipped though.

All it is is a little grain-of-rice sized chip that is inserted under the skin. One of my cats did develop a bit of a lump where it'd been inserted, but that disappeared after a month or so. Neither of the other two had any reaction at all.

I guess the other thing to know is that the chip might move (not that you'll know it, LOL, and it'll stilll be read by the scanner, of course). That's perfectly normal, basically its just sitting under the skin, so can move around a bit until enough flesh grows round it to keep it in place. Won't bother your dog at all.

All my boxers have been microchipped! I highly recommend it. More shelters check than not. In our area it is very widespread. A county in Florida where we get boxers in from microchips all dogs adopted out of their animal control.
I adopted Jagger with a chip. Jilly got hers after she was adopted, just took her in and they did it right there. Tulley had his when he was neutered. It gives me some peace of mind that I am doing everything I can to ensure their happiness with me! Smart idea!

Ty is microchipped and Molly will be at her next vet appt! Had it done when Ty was being neutered, as well and he hasn't even noticed it. It's a GREAT idea and one thing to remember is if ANYTHING changes, like your address or phone number, make sure you call the microchipping company and have them change the info that comes up on the screen! They were telling me that many times people move and change their phone #'s and forget to have them update it! Just a gentle reminder!! :D

Maddux is microchipped and the only side effect I had with it were my second thoughts when I saw the size of the needle! That sucker is HUGE!

When we got Nikki m'chipped this past January, Ant (my hubby) was the one holding him as the vet injected it in. I swear, he got a bit queazy because the needle was so BIG!! It only took only a second to put in, but because the needle was big & thicker than normal needles, Ant heard a little "snap" as it made it through Nikki's skin. :eek:

It's great peace of mind. The chip cost $28, then $12.50 to register the ID# with the AKC Animal Recovery network.

I am also wondering how many people will actually check for the micro chips. I am also concerned about stolen dogs, (as my babies are the most beautiful dogs in the wide world). I think it would be hard to keep a stolen dog with a tattoo of the owners name and not sure what else... especially if there are posters all over the town about the stolen dog. Thinking odds are the thief would see that, and if nothing else let them loose for someone else to find, and then try to find us.

I inquired about tats too p ) when getting Maddux chipped and was told they really aren't better than a chip because there isn't a national registery for the number. And it's a needle being stuck over and over into them, though maybe they're put under, I don't know. Maybe a thief wouldn't know this and therefore it can be a deterrent. However, some thiefs may go so far as to try and burn it off or some other horror.

If the dog is stolen then I guess the best way is make sure all vet offices and shelters are informed that your dog is missing because eventually the dog will have to go to the vet.

we own a 12 week old boxer and we have been talking about getting him microchipped, can anyone tell us if he is too young to have this done and possibly how much the procedure costs....thanks :D

I had Hugo and Simon (our Boston) chipped. I have heard about a couple of lost dogs in my area that found their way home because someone dropped them off at a vets office that checked for a microchip.

If anyone ever tried to take one of my dogs, at least a microchip is undeniable proof that the dog belongs to be. Thiry bucks is a bargin for peace of mind.
