My Mersade Is 3 1/2 months old and she was microchipped when she was 8 weeks old . She didn't like the needle at all. It is a better way to go to protect your pet

I think it would be hard to keep a stolen dog with a tattoo of the owners name and not sure what else... especially if there are posters all over the town about the stolen dog. Thinking odds are the thief would see that, and if nothing else let them loose for someone else to find, and then try to find us.

Input on tattoos please?

I've been told that when any unknown dog is brought into a vet office or picked up by a humane society they have to be scanned to see if they have a chip. Then that chip can tell who the real owner is through a national registry.

REally, what do you mean, by unknown dog? Do you mean new to that clinic? If that is the case, that is very good news. But I am thinking you might mean a dog someone identifies as unknown... I am thinking I might do both (chip and tattoo)... A stolen dog will most likely not get scanned, but would be easy to see a tattoo,(God forbid they try to remove it). I am sorta creeped out lately by these guys who seem to be scoping out our house. Now... I spose they could be scoping the Harleys, lol, but ya notice where my mind goes.... Aaaaaa they are after my babies!!! And they are not protecter dogs yet, they would go yaaaaaay, a new friend, oh boy a ride in a car......and poof, be gone. But They are NEVER supposed to be alone outside when we aren't home. But today my 15 yr old son forgot to put them back in before he left for work!! When we got home their was no doggies beaning all over us, I had a heart attack! They were at the back yard sliding glass door just going nutso, and my son is in sooo much trouble!

When do they start getting the hang of strangers/bad...?

Microchipping is the best thing ever invented sincec sliced bread. Brutus will be almost 7 weeks old when he gets "chipped" on the 2nd of May. I researched microchipping quite a bit and was a bit leary when I saw the needle. (holy cow that suckers huge!!!) But I've talked to a couple people personally that have had they're animals chipped and they said it didn't even phase they're animals. A friend of mine paid over $1200 for one of her show dogs (not exactly sure what breed) but lost her for a month, and thanks to the chip, she's got her boy back. It's the #1 on my list of things to do as soon as we bring Brutus home. (May 1)

Cushti was micro-chipped 5 years ago and I had Dave done when he was 8 weeks.
I think micro-chipping is fine if a dog gets lost, I don't think that if a dog is stolen you'd stand a good chance of getting him/her back unless there's a dispute over ownership.
If a dog is stolen and then, at some point, taken to a vet, the vet just assumes that the dog belongs to whoever brings him/her in, so he wouldn't bother to use the scan.
What worries me is that the type of person who could actually steal someone's pet, can't be a dog lover, or surely they'd know the amount of pain and suffering that they are inflicting on that dog's owner, by taking their pet.
