the first time they took off nitro tape in his ear they also used sedative and he's also scheduled to get his shot... Nitro became so slow in his response and can't even stand on his own... The vet told me it's the first time that it happened to them and she refused to give nitro his shot and she insisted that nitro stay in the hospital for the night since i live 30 minutes aways from the clinic and she said that's too long of a drive if something happen... when she noticed i was worried about the payment she told me not to worry about it it's all free... nitro stay in that hospital for 2 days free of charge... did they messed up that day? maybe but they made sure that whatever mess they made that they took care of it... as far as i know after sedation most vet wouldn't let you take your puppy atleast for four hours so they can observed your puppy... so if your vet was saying it's ok it's just the effect of the sedation then im assuming that your puppy was still under sedation when they release your puppy... anyway your vet should have atleast advise you to take your puppy into emergency vet if you are worried instead of saying don't worry about it... if i were you i would asked for legal advise and go from there...

I am so very sorry for your loss. I wish you luck in your search and with your courses of action. Such a sad story but it is actually good that you shared it as if someone else notices these symptoms they may learn from the vets mistake.

I'm very concerned that all these vets are sedating puppies in order to tape their ears. Breeders don't do that, and there's no trauma that isn't overcome by a spoonful of peanut butter held by a helper while you tape!

If you've gotten a boxer from a local breeder, a good one will tape ears for you if you can't manage yourself, or at minimum show you how to do it. If you didn't buy your dog locally, ask around for a referral to somebody who will give you a half hour of their time to show you what to do.

There's no way I would sedate a puppy for the equivalent of pulling off a bandaid! Do they squirm, and is it uncomfortable? Yes, at least at first. But any discomfort that is forgotten in the face of peanut butter is not worth sedation!

At minimum, tell the vet no sedation, insist on being present, and bring a Kong with peanut butter to offer the dog as they're working on the ears. The entire process should take < 5 minutes, provided you've got the backrod and tape ready to go.

How devastating!! I am truly sorry for what you have been through, but know that your pup is now in heaven. My prayers are with you at this very sad time.

Hi. I want to thank everyone once again for their condolences and thoughts. It has helped me through this rough time. Also wanted to give you an update; I sat down this afternoon with the owner of the clinic and he did reimburse me for the cost of the puppy, and the cost of the cropping. Even though my time with Mozart was so short, he will never be forgotten. I'd like to believe that my other Boxers whom I've loved and lost will take good care of him.

It is a terrible thing losing a dog. I know the pain I have gone through and it is very hard. I would never put my dogs through unnecessary procedures. I feel that ear cropping as well as tail cropping is painful, and dangerous. You have now experienced the dangers at the cost of losing your pet. I hope people learn how risky this is and choose not to do this to their dog. It is a very painful procedure just for vanity.

What happened to this puppy was the result of negligence throuth the vet office. After calling the vet with the lethargic and pale gums symptoms the vet office did not act and that is why this pup lost its life.

While I agree that cropping and tail docking are not necessary procedures, if done by a competent and well trained vet these procedures can be and are safe. A sedative can be given for neuter or spay, teeth cleaning, or any other type of medical testing where the vet does not want to stress the dog. Unfortunately there are risks involved with just about anything and it is certainly in the best interest of the owner and pup to try to make informed decisions. After the cropping of the ears on all of my boxers I have never had any of them exhibit signs of pain and all did just fine. None of them required sedatives for the ear taping procedures as well. Education and research when making these decisions are the key, but to say these procedures are painful is not fair.

In resurrecting this old thread as your introductory post, remember, this could just as easily have been a spay or neuter surgery, or a dental cleaning. The reaction could have been due to the vaccination as well. My sister's dog went into shock for 24 hours after receiving a routine vac. The problem was the vet was not attentive enough, not that the ears were cropped. I don't think this thread is the appropriate vehicle to get into the somewhat touchy subject of cropping vs. non-cropping. If you prefer not to crop or dock, then of course, that is your option. But those of us who do crop are just as concerned about our dogs' comfort and love them just as much, as those who do not. Here on BW, we love all Boxers and appreciate and enjoy comraderie and friendship with all those who love them as well. Throwing down the gaunlet in this manner is just asking for argument.

Very well said. This is an old thread. Do not turn this into a debate on cropping

Agree with the above posts. This puppy died from a negligent vet, it could have happened for any reason. That is a sad situation anyway you look at it.
