Colleen, that's a good point of view, I understand more now. I still couldn't even see them as friends...there were some funny moments though as Bob adjusted to life in Hong Kong

That's the point. ;) Among lots of other aspects its about two people who are extremely lonely in a strange land brought together by their circumstances. Had it been a different situation they wouldn't have been friends, but this strange situation brought them together.

Andie, I agree. It was sort of a funny and warm relationship of two lost souls in Tokoyo. When she found Bob with another woman she wasn't angry because she wasn't interested in him that way. They were both having a difficult time in Tokoyo and found each other to have fun and maybe get a new outlook on life. I also applaud Bob for not hitting on Charlotte.

I guess I was truly "Lost in the Translation"  This is why I love to read movie reviews because everyone sees something different and that's what makes it interesting! If we all agreed - life would be boring :D We all agree to disagree ;)

I loved the movie. I agree with myrocky and scorpio. It was a neat movie about two people who would never have met each other. There are so many different people and in different circumstances we would all be friends. That concept is brilliant. I liked that it was never a torrid love affair. That is NOT what the movie was about. It was about true friendship.

I think I needed a better interpreter...

....As being able to translate such a boring film was far too much for me !!
I got a hold of it on DVD and took it in to work one night and the whole shift sat round awaiting great things from a film that had been raved about by numerous critics.
hmmmm........We all sat round occasionally glancing at one another as if to say " is it just me that is finding this incredibly boring?"
Perhaps it was just too high brow and arty for a load of firefighters to understand
Not a fan of it.

I don't think the movie was about true friendship but more about mutual convenience and two crappy marriages (Bob cheated on his wife and Charlotte looked more than a little upset that he wasn't with her ;)).

Amen, Olly.

That was my take (and I LOVED the movie). I got that there were 2 sort of crappy marriages (should I say, they seemed "stuck in a rut")?

They also had romantic feelings for each other. Hence, Bill Murray working out really hard at midnight at they gym soon after he met her... and then there was her getting a bit angry after finding the woman in his hotel room.
