I'm devastated. I can't stop crying, and I never Cry. I went home to say good bye to Jake last night and spend time with him before the vet came this morning to put him down. I held him in my arms on his favourite Bean Bag as the Vet put the needle in his leg. I kept telling him how much I loved him and that everything would be ok, his breathing was weird and then he went limp in my arms and then I lay his beautiful head down. He smelt as good as he did when he was a little puppy, his ears were soft and shiny, his coat was dull and thin but still soft to the touch. He was 11 years and 2 months old and his kidneys were shot.

The hardest part is that he looked healthy and when the vet arrived to put him down he came out barking to let him know it was his territory (a half hearted limp bark but it was instinctual in him), last night he jumped up on my bed and slept on the end of it. He passed on a good day but he had many bad days. For two years he had been on Canine RD (a perscription low protein food), heart pills and thyroid pills. He started to have mini fits, drank huge amounts of water and had to pee every hour, lately he started peeing in the house and got very distressed as he was such a clean, proud dog.

Due to the involvement of a family member, a previous dog of mine (with severe Diabetes) suffered longer than he should have so I vowed that Jake wouldn't suffer as soon as his body started to shut down. On advice from our Vet we decided to say goodbye to our very special friend. I have spent hours upon hours walking in the mountains with him and I have such marvelous memories of him.

So long Jake, you were a true best friend and a loyal protector. You were such a handsome dog and a joy to observe while playing with your toys. I miss you so much that there are no words to explain the sheer emptiness I feel. I don't know If I will ever have another dog as I fear I would compare them to you. I hope you are Ok wherever you are and not scared. I love you so much, my special special boy. Goodbye

I'm so very sorry for your loss of Jake, I know right now there's nothing anyone can say to help your pain, it is so terrible.
We too lost Morrissey when he was 11 years old, I always try to think that he had a long and happy life and that he is healthy and happy where he is.
Our Two boys are probably running together sharing old man stories. Jake will always be with you, watching over you, sending you many hugs during this difficult time, take care, hugs...Kate.

My Boyhood Dog

by Spike Milligan

Boxer, my Boxer,
where do you lie?
Somewhere under
a Poona sky.
Ah! my canine,
total joy
you were to me
when as a boy
we coursed the wind
and ran the while,
no end in sight,
mile after mile.
I was to you
and you to me
locked in a bond
eternally.
They never told me
when you died
to spare me pain
in case I cried.
So then to
those adult fears
denied you then,
my childhood tears.

We have all been thru that terrible heartwrenching pain that you are going thru right now- just be assured that Jake is not scared- he's in a wonderful place- running and playing freely with all the other babies.
