Hello! I just brought home my Angel. She is 4 months old and weighs 11 pounds. Is this small? Have any tips to fatten her up a bit. She does not like commercial dog food since I have had her I can only get her to eat tuna fish, our choice of meat for the day and banannas. Thanks.

We brought Riley home at 9 weeks and he was about 11 pounds then. At four months he was about 30 pounds.

Just based on that (which is my only experience), it does sound like Angel is small for her age, but as long as she's healthy, who's to say what's the right size?

Does your vet seem concerned?

Our newest boxer boy "Sergeant" is 8wks today and as of Saturday he was 10.5 lbs. I agree with Rileymom though, as long as she is healthy and your vet is not concerned then I wouldn't worry if I were you. She maybe little in size, but her heart will always remain big! lovicon

She went to the vet and they did not say to be worried about anything. I did not realize that she was so small until I read other postings. She is very energetic and happy. At least she is eating something.

Food

You may want to look into an alternative diet for her, if she doesn't like commercial dog food. Several people on here feed their dogs a BARF diet (there's a forum on this site about it) or make their dog's food (boiled meats and certain vegetables). You may want to do a search on this site or on the web, and talk to your vet to get some ideas. JEB always liked whatever we would feed him, but he also had a very sensitive tummy. You may find that certain foods upset your little girl's stomach, so keep an eye on her when trying out new foods. Good luck, and enjoy your time with your new baby!!!!

I have a small baby too - she's six months old and only weighs about 30 pounds. I call her my little midget! I was concerned about her being so tiny, but she's healthy & I've heard boxers can vary in size quite a bit.

You might want to try mixing dog food with gravy. I've seen vitamin gravy just for dogs, maybe that would work? I used to feed my picky eater a mixture of dog food, white rice, baby food & gravy! I slowly got him used to eating dog food only, it took almost a year! Good luck!

My Brindle niece is here (visiting from CO, yeah!) and she is a tiny thing too! She is four months old and 20 lbs. All legs!

I can't remember numbers that great.

When we picked Striker out at 5 weeks old, he was 8 pounds.
We havent' had him weighed lately, so not sure how much he weighs now at 13 months.

Nellie was 40 pounds at 4.5 months. Not quite sure how much she weighs now either.

Looks like we'll be hitting the scales soon!

I would have the vet recommend a growth diet for her if he thinks she's too small for her age. We had Casper on a special perscription when we got him because he was about ten pounds underweight then.

Angel sounds a little small but don't let the big dogs scare you. When we brought Amaya home at 11 weeks she was only 6 lbs. At 4 months she was 17 1/2 lbs and at 5 months she was 23 lbs. She is now about 10 months old and 46 lbs.

In comparison, Bru was 20 lbs on his puppy visit at 12 weeks. By 4 months he was 35 lbs and 50 lbs at 7 months. He is about 15 mo old, 65 lbs and still growing. He will probably be about 75-80 lbs full grown where Amaya will be 55-60.

I would make sure the vet has checked your puppy for worms or other problems. Amaya had worms when we brought her home which contributed to her small weight. She had been wormed by the breeder but had cocidoius which is not killed by most wormers. As long as the vet has cleared everything I would feed her and not be too worried. Like people some doggies are just smaller than others:)
